How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
New Mexico State is 2-3 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 3.4 points a game across 5 games. New Mexico is 3-4 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 0.1 a game across 7 games. The difference is 3.5 points. Half of it, rounded, is 1.8.
Five and seven games is thin. New Mexico State has not hosted an FBS team this season, so all five of its games are from 2025. One of New Mexico’s seven is from 2026: the 14-6 loss at Oklahoma on 19 September.

2026 so far
New Mexico is 2-1. It beat Central Michigan 38-7 on 5 September, beat Mercyhurst, a team outside the FBS, 70-7, and lost at Oklahoma. Against its two FBS opponents it has scored 22.0 a game and allowed 10.5.
New Mexico State is 1-2. It lost 34-17 at Florida State on 29 August, beat the same Mercyhurst 51-14, and lost 29-19 at Hawai’i on 12 September. Against its two FBS opponents it has scored 18.0 a game and allowed 31.5.
That is the case for the favourite, and it is real: 22.0 points a game scored against FBS teams, to New Mexico State’s 18.0. The method uses little of it. New Mexico State has not hosted an FBS team this season, and New Mexico’s only 2026 road game is the loss at Oklahoma.

Last season
New Mexico went 9-4 in 2025 and won by 4.8 points a game. It finished with a 20-17 loss to Minnesota at a neutral site on 26 December. New Mexico State went 4-8 and lost by 6.0 a game.
The two met on 27 September 2025 at New Mexico. New Mexico won 38-20. Played at the other end of the trip, that game is in neither sample.
