How Minnesota by 4.6 is reached

The method takes two averages and halves the difference between them. One is the home team’s average margin at home. The other is the visitor’s average margin on the road. Both count only games against FBS teams, across 2025 and 2026. Bowl and playoff games are played at neutral sites and stay out.

Minnesota is 9-1 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 7.2 points a game across 10 games. UCLA is 4-5 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 2.0 a game across 9 games. Half the difference is 4.6 points in Minnesota’s favor. Both samples clear the 4-game minimum the rule sets.

This season so far

None of what follows is in our number. UCLA is 8-0, 5-0 in the Big Ten, and every game has come against an FBS team. It has scored 33.5 points a game and allowed 13.4, a margin of +20.1. The AP Poll for Week 10 has it fifth.

The one shared opponent points the same way. UCLA beat Purdue 52-38 at home on 19 September. Minnesota lost 41-13 at Purdue on 10 October.

Minnesota at home, UCLA on the road

Minnesota went 7-0 at home in 2025. This season it is 4-1 at home. The one loss in the 9-1 FBS sample is 38-13 to Mississippi State on 12 September. The FBS home wins this season were 41-7 over Akron, 20-14 over Michigan and 13-10 over Iowa on 24 October. A 59-7 win over Eastern Illinois is outside the method, as Eastern Illinois is not an FBS team.

UCLA went 1-5 on the road in 2025. It has won all three road games this season: 45-24 at California, 54-3 at Maryland and 17-15 at Oregon on 10 October. That is the weak point in the road half. Most of its losing record away from home belongs to the 2025 team, and the 2026 team has not lost anywhere.

The halves the method leaves out lean toward UCLA. Minnesota went 0-5 on the road in 2025, and is 1-2 there this season, with a 27-24 win at Washington. UCLA is 5-0 at home this season after 2-4 at home in 2025.

What kills the bet

The line. Minnesota stays the bet down to Minnesota -1.6. UCLA would need to be getting 7.6 points or more to be the bet itself.

The risk is UCLA’s 2026 form. It is unbeaten against eight FBS teams by 20.1 points a game, has won all three road games, and the market and FPI both rate it about a two-to-one favorite. Our number trusts two seasons over eight games, and the 2025 UCLA that went 3-9 is part of it.
