How the number is built

The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.

San José State is 2-4 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 6.8 points a game across 6 games. Wyoming is 1-7 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 13.0 a game across 8 games. San José State’s figure is 6.2 points better. Half of it is 3.1.

That is 14 games, split 6 and 8. The rule asks for at least 4 on each side, so both samples count. Both are small, and the number moves a long way on one result.

San José State at home

Two of the six home games were wins: 35-28 over New Mexico and 45-38 over Hawai’i, both in 2025.

The four losses are where the average comes from. Central Michigan won 16-14 on 29 August 2025. Air Force won 26-16. Fresno State won 41-14 in November 2025 and came back on 19 September to win 26-10. Those two Fresno State games account for 43 points of the 41-point total deficit across the six. Without them, San José State would be a small plus at home.

Wyoming on the road

Wyoming’s only road win against an FBS team in this span was the first one, 10-0 at Akron on 28 August 2025.

Then seven losses. In 2025: 37-20 at Colorado, 24-21 at Air Force, 24-7 at San Diego State, 24-3 at Fresno State and 27-7 at Hawai’i. In 2026: 35-13 at Colorado State on 5 September and 24-10 at Central Michigan on 19 September. Six of the seven were lost by 14 or more. The exception is the 3-point loss at Air Force.

2026 so far

Wyoming is 2-2 and has scored 17.8 points a game while allowing 20.5. One of the wins was 21-13 over Northern Colorado, a team outside the FBS, and the method does not count it. The other was 27-10 over Hawai’i at home on 26 September. Wyoming is 1-0 in the Mountain West.

San José State is also 2-2, scoring 23.2 and allowing 27.2. It lost 42-26 at USC, won 27-21 at Eastern Michigan and beat Cal Poly 30-20, a win outside the FBS that the method leaves out. Then came the 26-10 home loss to Fresno State. It has not played a Mountain West game yet.

Last season and the last meeting

Wyoming went 4-8 in 2025 and was outscored by 4.5 points a game. San José State went 3-9 and was outscored by 11.1.

The teams met once in that span. Wyoming won 35-28 at home on 11 October 2025. It was a Wyoming home game, so neither sample uses it.
