Rays vs Yankees Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

No bet on the Yankees or the Rays in Game 3. The market rates New York 2.5 points higher than we do, short of the 5 a bet needs.

DraftKings has the Yankees at -162 and the Rays at +134. With the margin removed, that is 59.1% for New York. Our number for the Yankees is 56.6%, and for the Rays 43.4%. The gap is 2.5 points toward the Rays, and the threshold for a bet is 5.

How the number is built

The method in one clause: each team’s run-based win rate for the 2026 regular season, set against each other, then moved by how often home teams won this season.

The run-based rate uses runs alone. It is runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that same figure plus runs allowed to the power 1.83. The Yankees scored 739 and allowed 601 in 161 games, which gives 59.3%. Their actual record was 93-68, a 57.8% rate.

The Rays scored 736 and allowed 650 in 162 games, for 55.7%. Their actual record was 98-64, a 60.5% rate. Tampa Bay won five more games than New York while scoring three fewer runs and allowing 49 more. The method reads the runs, which is why it likes the Yankees more than the standings do.

Set against each other on a neutral field, those two rates give the Yankees 53.8%. Home teams went 1,284-1,145 in the 2026 regular season, a 52.9% rate. Adding that edge takes the Yankees to 56.6% and leaves the Rays at 43.4%.

The series so far

This is a best-of-five American League Division Series, and the Rays lead it 2-0. They won Game 1 at Tropicana Field, 1-0, on Saturday 3 October, and Game 2 there, 5-2, on Monday 5 October. The Yankees have scored two runs in two games.

Game 3 is at Yankee Stadium. A Rays win ends the series. A Yankees win forces Game 4, also at Yankee Stadium, on Thursday 8 October, and a Game 5 would go back to Tropicana Field on Saturday 10 October. ESPN lists both as “If Necessary”.

The Yankees reached this round by beating the Red Sox 2-0 in the Wild Card Series. None of these games is in our number, which rests on the regular season alone.

The starters

Nick Martinez, a right-hander, starts for the Rays: 3.10 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over 180 innings in 31 starts. Max Fried, a left-hander, starts for the Yankees: 2.80 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 112 2/3 innings in 20 starts. Both lines are ESPN’s 2026 regular-season figures.

ERA is earned runs allowed per nine innings. WHIP is walks plus hits allowed per inning.

Our number does not use the starters. It is built from what each team did across the season, with every pitcher it used. The market’s price does account for who starts, so part of the 2.5-point gap is these two, and our method cannot say how much.

The Yankees at home, the Rays on the road

The Yankees went 46-34 at home, scoring 4.76 runs a game and allowing 4.04. The Rays went 43-38 on the road, scoring 4.48 and allowing 4.05. The method uses the full season for both teams, because a home or road split halves the sample.

The teams met 13 times in the regular season, and the Rays won seven. The Yankees won four of the six played in New York. That is 13 games, and they prove nothing about this one.

The price

The Yankees opened at -147 and the Rays at +122. Read at 06:51 UTC on 6 October, DraftKings via ESPN, they were -162 and +134. The market has moved toward New York since the open, away from our number.

The market’s figure is the moneyline with the margin taken out. The margin is the few points a book builds into both prices so they add up to more than 100%. Here it is 4.6 points.

Pick: pass on the moneyline

No bet at Yankees -162 or Rays +134. Our number for the Rays is 43.4%, the market’s is 40.9%, and a 2.5-point gap is short of the 5-point threshold.

The Rays become a bet at +150 or any price that pays more. The Yankees would need -117. Between those two prices, it is a pass.

What changes it

The price first. The Rays have already drifted from +122 to +134. Another move the same way, to +150, makes Tampa Bay a bet. The read above is a day before first pitch, so check it again.

Then the lineups. A season of runs says how these two teams played from March to September, and nothing on this page says who is in either lineup. Check them, and the starters, before you bet.

The total

The total is 7, where it opened, with the over at -122 and the under at +102. Pass on the total.

Over the season, 84 of the 140 Yankees games that did not land on 7 went over it, and 83 of 141 Rays games. Those games were started by every pitcher in both rotations. A postseason total is set for the two starters named, so we pass on every postseason total, this one included.
