Guardians vs Rays Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
No bet on Game 1 at Tropicana Field. The market makes the Rays 59.9% to win, our number makes them 57.7%, and neither side is far enough from its price to back.
DraftKings has the Rays at -168 and the Guardians at +138. Those two prices carry a 4.7-point margin. Remove it and the market reads Tampa Bay 59.9%, Cleveland 40.1%. Ours reads 57.7% and 42.3%. That leaves the Guardians 2.2 points better than their price says, and we bet at 5.
How the number is built
Three steps, the same on every baseball page. Rate each club on the runs it scored and allowed in the 2026 regular season, put the two rates against each other, then add the edge home teams earned across the league this year.
Tampa Bay scored 736 runs and allowed 650 in 162 games. Runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that figure plus runs allowed to the same power, gives the Rays 55.7%. Their 98-64 record is a 60.5% rate, so they won 4.8 points more often than their runs say. Cleveland scored 678 and allowed 667: 50.7% by runs, 52.5% by an 85-77 record. On runs, the Rays are 5.0 points the better club.
On a neutral field those rates make Tampa Bay 54.9% to win. Home teams went 1,284-1,145 in the 2026 regular season, a 52.9% rate, and with that added the Rays reach 57.7%. The market is 2.2 points above that. One reading is that it prices the 98 wins, where our method prices the runs behind them.
Where the series stands
It has not started. ESPN lists this as Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, with the series beginning on 12 October.
The number uses each club’s 162 regular-season games and stops there. Nothing either team has done since the season ended is in it.
The starters
ESPN names no probable starter for either club in its read of 11 October, so this page names none.
The 57.7% does not move with the name. It is built from a full season of games, whoever pitched them. The price will move when the two starters are announced, and that is the moment to check it against the two prices given under the pick.
The season behind it
The Rays went 55-26 at home, scoring 4.60 runs a game and allowing 3.98. The Guardians were a better road club than a home one: 44-37 away with 4.21 scored and 3.93 allowed, against 41-40 in Cleveland with 4.16 and 4.31. The method uses the full season for both, because a split cuts each sample in half.
The clubs played six times and Tampa Bay won five. The Rays took two of three in Cleveland in April, 3-2 and 1-0 before a 3-1 loss, then swept three at home in July by 11-3, 3-0 and 1-0. Cleveland scored eight runs across the six games. Six games are too few to move a rate built on 162, and none of them is counted twice: they are already inside each club’s season totals.
The price
The Rays opened at -168 and the Guardians at +138, and that is where DraftKings, via ESPN, still had them at 03:59 UTC on 11 October. The line has not moved.
The market’s percentages here are the moneyline with its margin removed. The margin was 4.7 points at this read, and the two prices under the pick are worked out with it.
Pick: No bet
No bet at Rays -168 or Guardians +138. The lean is to Cleveland, by 2.2 points: ours is 42.3% for the Guardians and the market’s is 40.1%. The threshold is 5.
The Guardians become a bet at +157 or longer. The Rays become one at -123 or longer. At any price between those two, pass.
What changes it
The price is the first thing. The read is about 44 hours before first pitch and the line sits on its opening number. Cleveland needs another 19 cents, from +138 to +157, before it is worth a bet.
The starters are the second. Once both clubs name their Game 1 pitcher, the market will carry that and our number will not. Compare the new price with +157 and -123 before taking either side.
The total
The total is 7, where it opened, with the over at +101 and the under at -121. Pass on the total.
In the regular season the Rays went over 7 in 83 of 162 games and landed on it in 21. The Guardians went over in 85 and landed on it in 17. Those counts include every pitcher either club used all year. A postseason total is set on the two starters of the night, which a season count cannot see, so we pass on every postseason total.
