Canadiens vs Capitals Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
No bet on the Canadiens at +110. Our number leans to Montreal by 3.1 points, and a bet needs 5.
The Washington Capitals are -130 and the Montreal Canadiens +110 at DraftKings. Strip the margin and the market has Washington at 54.3% and Montreal at 45.7%. Our number gives the Capitals 51.2% and the Canadiens 48.8%. We agree with the book about who is the favourite and disagree about how much, by 3.1 points on Montreal’s side. That is 1.9 short of a bet.
Two halves, 61.0% and 41.5%
The method is one average. Take the home team’s 2025-26 win rate in its own building and the visitor’s 2025-26 loss rate away from home, with a win in overtime or a shootout counted as a win, and split the difference. Neither of these teams played at a neutral site last season, so every game counts in one half or the other.
The Capitals went 25-11-5 at home, which reads 25 wins, 11 regulation losses and 5 losses after regulation. Over 41 games that is a 61.0% home win rate. The Canadiens went 24-9-8 on the road and lost 17 of 41, a 41.5% road loss rate. The two average to 51.2% for Washington.
Washington’s half is the strong one. A team that wins 25 of 41 at home would be a clear favourite over an ordinary visitor. Montreal was not one: only 9 of its 41 road games ended in a regulation loss, and that pulls the Capitals back to within 1.2 points of even.
Books price both sides a little short, so the two prices add to more than 100%, and that extra is the margin. Here -130 and +110 add to 104.1%. With it taken out, the Capitals are 54.3% and the Canadiens 45.7%.
The 3.1 points are worth reading for what they are made of. Our number is 41 home games for Washington and 41 road games for Montreal, every one of them from 2025-26. Both teams play on Tuesday 13 October, the night before this game, and that result is not in the figures. No game from 2026-27 is. Nothing here measures either roster’s summer.
Washington at home, Montreal anywhere
The Capitals at home scored 3.39 goals a game and allowed 2.66, a surplus of 0.73. The Canadiens on the road scored 3.56 and allowed 3.15, a surplus of 0.41. Both halves are in credit, the home one by more.
The building mattered a great deal to Washington. On the road the Capitals went 18-19-4, a 43.9% win rate over 41 games, and were outscored: 3.02 goals a game for, 3.29 against. The method reads only the home half, which is the half that applies to a game in Washington.
Montreal did not care where it played. The Canadiens went 24-15-2 at home and 24-9-8 on the road, 24 wins in 41 both times, 58.5% either way. They scored more on the road than at home, 3.56 a game against 3.34.
Over the full season the visitor was the better team. The Canadiens finished 48-24-10 with 106 points and outscored opponents by 27 goals. The Capitals finished 43-30-9 with 95 points, plus 19 in goals, and did not play in the playoffs. Montreal won two series, 4-3 over Tampa Bay and 4-3 over Buffalo, before losing 4-1 to Carolina. No playoff game is in our number.
Close games separate them further. The Canadiens went 23-6-10 in one-goal games and won 14 of the 24 that went past 60 minutes. The Capitals went 13-8-9 in one-goal games and won 6 of 15 past 60 minutes. When Washington won, it tended to win clear: 30 of its 43 wins were by two goals or more, against 25 of Montreal’s 48.
The teams met three times in 2025-26 and the Capitals won two. Washington won 8-4 at the Bell Centre on 20 November and 3-2 in overtime at Capital One Arena on 13 January. Montreal won 6-2 at the Bell Centre on 28 February. Those three count in the number as three games among 41 for each side, no more.
Pick: No bet on the Canadiens +110
Pass on the moneyline. The lean is to Montreal, 48.8% against a price that says 45.7%, and 3.1 points do not reach the 5-point threshold.
The line opened at Capitals -130 and Canadiens +110 and was the same when it was read on 13 October 2026 at 17:32 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN.
The prices that would make it a bet
For Montreal the number to watch is +129. At +129 or longer the Canadiens are a bet whatever Washington is priced at, and they are +110 now. That is 19 cents of drift toward the Capitals from a line that has not moved since it opened.
The other side needs far more. The Capitals are a bet only at +117 or longer, and they are a -130 favourite.
Then there is what no price tells you. This page states nothing about who plays for either team on 14 October, and both teams have a game the night before. Read the lineups before you bet anything on this one.
The total and the puck line
The total is 6.5, over -115 and under -105. The Capitals’ games went over 6.5 in 34 of 82 and the Canadiens’ in 44 of 82. Washington’s home games averaged 6.05 goals and Montreal’s road games 6.71.
Those over rates are 41.5% and 53.7%, and they average 47.6%. The over at -115 is priced at 51.1% once the margin is out. The gap is 3.5 points toward the under, short of 5. Pass on the total.
On the puck line the Capitals are -1.5 at +190 and the Canadiens +1.5 at -230, which is 33.1% and 66.9% without the margin. Washington won by two goals or more in 30 of 82 games. Montreal lost by two or more in 18 of 82. Averaged, Capitals -1.5 comes in 29.3% of the time against 33.1% priced. That is 3.8 points toward Canadiens +1.5, the same direction as the moneyline lean and the same answer. Pass, and the call on the game stays no bet at +110.
