Steelers vs Buccaneers prediction: Take Buccaneers +2.5
Take Tampa Bay and the 2.5 points at home. The total is a pass.
DraftKings opened this game with Tampa Bay a 1.5-point favourite and a total of 45.5. Read through ESPN on 16 October 2026 at 16:41 UTC, the same book has Pittsburgh -2.5 at -115, Tampa Bay +2.5 at -105, and a total of 39.5. Across the 11 US sportsbooks read at 16:40 UTC, the median is Pittsburgh -2.5 and 39.5.
The number the argument rests on
My method for the side, in one clause: half the gap between the two teams’ points per game differentials, plus 2.5 points for home field. Pittsburgh was +10 over 17 games in 2025, +0.59 a game. Tampa Bay was -31, -1.82 a game. Half the gap is 1.21 in Pittsburgh’s favour. Add 2.5 for home field and Tampa Bay comes out a 1.29-point favourite.
The market has Tampa Bay getting 2.5. Against my number that is an edge of 3.79 points. My threshold is two. Below two I pass, because a number built on season rates carries more error than that.
Five weeks of 2026 are played, so a bet has to clear the threshold twice. This season alone has Tampa Bay by 1.1. Weight the two seasons by games played, 17 to five, and Tampa Bay is favoured by 1.25. The edge on the weighted number is 3.75.
Pick: Buccaneers +2.5
Ten of the 11 books have Tampa Bay +2.5, most of them at -105. BetRivers asks -108, MyBookie -110, and LowVig has it at even money. BetUS has +2 at -105. At -105 the bet needs to win 51.2% of the time to break even.
The side stays a bet down to +1, where the edges are 2.29 and 2.25. At +0.5 the weighted edge is 1.75 and I pass. A pick’em is a pass as well.
This season has not moved the number. Pittsburgh is 3-2 and has outscored opponents 111-109. Tampa Bay is 1-4 and has been outscored 112-100. On those five games each, the Steelers are 0.4 points a game better and the Buccaneers 2.4 worse, which puts Tampa Bay ahead by 1.1 at home. That is close to the 1.29 from last season.
The moneyline prices Pittsburgh to win 56.4% of the time, from a median of -143 against Tampa Bay’s +120 at 11 books. I stay with the points.
The doubt: Baker Mayfield
ESPN’s injury list, read on 16 October, has Baker Mayfield doubtful with a thumb injury, in an entry dated 15 October. Antoine Winfield Jr. is doubtful too, with a rib injury. My method runs on points scored and allowed. It does not know who plays quarterback.
Tampa Bay has already played two games without him. Jalon Daniels threw every Tampa Bay pass in Week 4 and Week 5, by ESPN’s box scores. The Buccaneers lost 17-14 at home to Green Bay, then won 24-16 at Dallas as 9.5-point underdogs.
Run those two games through the same method, against Pittsburgh’s 2026 rates, and Tampa Bay comes out favoured by 3.55. That is further from the market than either number above. Two games prove nothing, and I do not bet on them. What they do say is that the side does not depend on Mayfield’s season.
The total: a pass
The method gives an over, and a large one. Each team’s expected points are the average of what it scored a game and what the other side allowed. On 2025 rates that is 23.8 for Pittsburgh and 22.6 for Tampa Bay, a total of 46.4, which is 6.9 over the market. The weighted number is 45.7. Both clear two by a distance.
I pass anyway. Tampa Bay’s half of that number is last season’s offence, which scored 22.4 a game. In the two games without Mayfield it scored 14 and 24, and those games finished on 31 and 40. Put those two games in for Tampa Bay and the total comes out at 39.75, a quarter of a point over the market. That is no edge at all.
Last season 12 of the Steelers’ 17 games went over 39.5, and 11 of the Buccaneers’ did. This season’s totals are 33, 23, 57, 51 and 56 for Pittsburgh, and 60, 42, 39, 31 and 40 for Tampa Bay, three over in each case. A total built on a quarterback who may not play is a number I cannot defend. The side does not need him. The total does.
Home and road
Tampa Bay is 0-3 at home this season, losing 23-19 to Cleveland, 23-16 to Minnesota and 17-14 to Green Bay. Pittsburgh is 0-2 on the road. Three games and two games are not a rate.
Last season the Buccaneers went 4-4 at home, scoring 23.9 a game and allowing 23.6. The Steelers went 4-4 on the road, scoring 23.2 and allowing 24.2, with their game in Dublin left out. The splits add nothing the 2.5 points for home field do not already carry.
The two teams did not meet in 2025, and the game records I use begin with that season.
What would change the call
The price first. Tampa Bay at +1 is still a bet and +0.5 is not. Mayfield being listed as available would not change the side, but it would make the total worth reading again. Read both injury reports and the current price before you bet; the prices here were read on Friday, two days before the game.
Pick: Buccaneers +2.5.
