Sun Belt Football Odds still begin with defending champion James Madison, but the betting market has become more attractive as the 2026 college football season approaches. The Dukes remain the favorite, yet bettors can now find prices as long as approximately +290 after the market sat closer to +230 earlier in the summer.

Old Dominion remains the most dangerous East Division challenger near +450 to +460, while Troy and Louisiana lead the West around +800 to +850. Marshall, Arkansas State and new Sun Belt member Louisiana Tech form an intriguing second tier with double-digit futures prices.

Sun Belt Football Odds Update

James Madison remains at the top of the market, but the Dukes can now be found between approximately +230 and +290 depending on the sportsbook. The longest number is considerably more attractive than the +230 price available in the previous update.

Old Dominion remains remarkably stable around +425 to +460. The Monarchs still provide the cleanest alternative to JMU because they won 10 games last season and host the Dukes in one of the first major conference games of the year.

Louisiana has attracted some support and can now be found as short as +700, although +850 remains available at the best books. Marshall has also shortened at several operators, while Troy remains close to its earlier +800 range.

Current Sun Belt Championship Odds 2026

James Madison remains the only team consistently priced below +300. Old Dominion is clearly second, while the next five or six programs create a much more balanced middle tier.

Louisiana and Troy are particularly interesting because the best available numbers are almost identical. Troy received overwhelming preseason support from the league’s coaches, while Louisiana offers a stronger payout at several books and has consistently reached bowl season under Michael Desormeaux.

Marshall also deserves serious attention because preseason Offensive Player of the Year Carlos Del Rio-Wilson gives the Thundering Herd one of the strongest quarterback advantages in the conference.

Louisiana Tech is another sportsbook-dependent team. Some markets remain near +1000 while others extend to +1300, and that 300-point difference is significant on a season-long future.

The large sportsbook differences on teams such as Marshall, Louisiana Tech and Georgia Southern reinforce why conference futures should always be price-sensitive. A prediction can remain identical while the quality of the wager changes dramatically.

Sun Belt Futures Market Movement

The current board is more favorable to several of the teams highlighted in the previous update.

James Madison opened near +310 before moving into the +230 range earlier in the summer. The current market has widened again at certain sportsbooks, with prices reaching approximately +290. That gives bettors another opportunity to back the favorite without paying the shortest number.

Old Dominion has remained relatively stable, confirming that the market continues to view the Monarchs as the clear No. 2 team.

Louisiana has received meaningful support. The Ragin’ Cajuns were approximately +850 in the previous update and can now be found as short as +700. We still want the longest available +850 rather than chasing the shorter number.

Marshall has experienced the largest sportsbook disagreement. The Herd remain +1100 at the longest current price but have shortened below +800 elsewhere. That makes line shopping essential.

Sun Belt Football Teams and Divisions in 2026

The Sun Belt remains a 14-team football conference divided into East and West divisions.

The major change is Louisiana Tech replacing Texas State, which moved to the Pac-12. Louisiana Tech officially became a Sun Belt member on July 1 and joins the West Division.

Each program plays eight conference games: six against the other teams in its division and two cross-divisional opponents.

The division structure matters for futures betting because a strong East team does not need to finish with a better record than every West contender. It only needs to win its own seven-team division and then defeat the West champion in the title game.

2026 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll

The official coaches poll reinforces the sportsbook hierarchy at the top.

James Madison received 11 of 14 first-place votes in the East and 94 total points. Old Dominion finished second, while Marshall placed third.

The West produced an even stronger consensus. Troy received 12 of 14 first-place votes and 96 points. Louisiana was second and Arkansas State third.

The most interesting discrepancy involves Marshall. The Thundering Herd ranked only third in the East but placed nine total players on the preseason first and second all-conference teams, giving Marshall one of the deepest collections of recognized individual talent in the league.

James Madison Sun Belt Championship Prediction

James Madison remains our prediction to win the 2026 Sun Belt Championship.

The Dukes went 12-2 last season, won the program’s first Sun Belt Championship Game and became the first Sun Belt team to reach the College Football Playoff.

The primary concern is obvious: this is not the same coaching staff that produced last year’s breakthrough. Bob Chesney left for UCLA and Billy Napier takes over after previously building championship teams at Louisiana.

Napier’s previous Sun Belt experience reduces some of the normal coaching-change risk. He already understands the travel, recruiting footprint and week-to-week volatility of this league.

Quarterback remains the most important preseason question. JMU entered fall camp with multiple options competing for the job rather than one established returning starter.

The roster still includes high-level conference talent. Offensive lineman Zach Greenberg and defensive lineman Amar Thomas earned preseason first-team All-Sun Belt recognition, while running back George Pettaway was named to the second team.

The schedule is difficult enough to create risk. James Madison opens against Liberty, later travels to San Diego State and begins conference play at Old Dominion. The Dukes also host Marshall and Troy while traveling to Georgia Southern and App State.

The improving price is what keeps JMU on top of our betting card. The Dukes were difficult to chase near +230. At +270 or +290, the risk-to-reward profile is much stronger.

Sun Belt Championship Prediction: James Madison at +270 or better.

Old Dominion Sun Belt Championship Prediction

Old Dominion remains our favorite alternative to James Madison.

The Monarchs went 10-3 last season and finished with six consecutive victories, including a bowl win over South Florida.

Ricky Rahne has built enough continuity for ODU to enter the season as a legitimate championship program rather than a one-year surprise.

Running back Devin Roche returns after earning preseason first-team All-Sun Belt honors. The defense also brings back respected pieces including Chris Forbes, Mario Easterly and Zion Frink.

The roster does include substantial turnover. Old Dominion added more than 50 new players through high school recruiting, junior college additions and the transfer portal, creating some early-season uncertainty.

The biggest betting advantage is the schedule. James Madison visits Norfolk on September 26.

A home victory over JMU would immediately give Old Dominion the most important East Division tiebreaker and could cut the Monarchs’ championship price dramatically.

ODU later hosts Georgia Southern and Marshall, which means three of the East’s strongest competing teams must visit S.B. Ballard Stadium.

At +450 or +460, Old Dominion remains the best alternative futures position on the board.

Troy Sun Belt Championship Prediction

Troy remains our most likely West Division champion.

The Trojans have reached three of the last four Sun Belt Championship Games and return several players capable of keeping the defense among the league’s best.

Donnie Smith enters as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while punter Evan Crenshaw received preseason Special Teams Player of the Year honors.

Quarterback Goose Crowder was selected to the preseason All-Sun Belt second team, giving Troy more established offensive continuity than several other West teams.

The coaching staff also receives overwhelming respect from the rest of the league. Troy collected 12 of 14 first-place votes in the West Division poll.

The October 17 road game at Louisiana may determine which team controls the division. Troy later travels to James Madison in a cross-divisional matchup that adds difficulty but also creates a chance to strengthen its overall résumé.

At +800 to +850, Troy is fairly priced. The Trojans are the most likely West winner, but Louisiana offers comparable championship odds with a slightly more attractive payout at the right sportsbook.

Troy Betting View: Strong contender at +850 or better.

Louisiana Sun Belt Championship Prediction

Louisiana is our preferred West Division value at +850 or better.

The Ragin’ Cajuns have reached eight consecutive bowl games, providing a level of program stability that is difficult to find outside the favorite tier.

Michael Desormeaux returns for another season and brings back several important offensive pieces. Quarterback Lunch Winfield represented Louisiana at Sun Belt Media Days, while wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. earned preseason first-team all-conference recognition.

The offensive line also retains experience, including Kaden Moreau, and the defense returns Fitzgerald West Jr. and Brent Gordon Jr. as preseason all-conference selections.

The schedule creates both risk and opportunity. Louisiana travels to USC in nonconference play, but the Sun Belt slate includes home games against Arkansas State, Troy, South Alabama and Coastal Carolina.

Troy visiting Lafayette on October 17 is the key. A Louisiana win would give the Cajuns a major tiebreaker against the overwhelming preseason West favorite.

Some books have already moved Louisiana toward +700. That is less appealing. The recommendation requires approximately +850 because Troy can be found at a similar number.

Best West Division Value: Louisiana at +850 or better.

Marshall Sun Belt Championship Prediction

Marshall is our preferred longer-priced East Division bet.

The argument begins with quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, the conference’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Del Rio-Wilson threw for more than 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns last season while adding 660 rushing yards and six scores. His ability to create offense both through the air and on designed runs gives Marshall an advantage in close conference games.

The surrounding roster received extensive preseason recognition. Marshall placed six players on the first-team All-Sun Belt roster and another three on the second team.

That talent explains why some sportsbooks have shortened Marshall below +800.

The schedule explains why we still require a larger price. The Herd travel to Penn State in Week 1 and later play conference road games at James Madison, Old Dominion and Georgia Southern.

Marshall therefore needs to survive several of the East’s most difficult environments rather than building its championship case primarily at home.

At +750, the risk is not compensated properly. At +1000 or +1100, Marshall becomes one of the strongest longshot positions available.

Best Sun Belt Longshot: Marshall at +1000 or better.

Louisiana Tech Sun Belt Championship Prediction

Louisiana Tech begins its first Sun Belt season with an intriguing +1000 to +1300 championship range.

The Bulldogs officially joined the conference on July 1 and immediately renewed several regional rivalries that fit naturally inside the West Division.

Sonny Cumbie’s team was picked fourth in the West, behind Troy, Louisiana and Arkansas State. That modest preseason expectation is one reason the longer +1300 number is appealing.

Linebacker Kolbe Fields provides defensive upside after receiving preseason first-team All-Sun Belt honors, while tight end Eli Finley earned second-team recognition.

The schedule is not easy. Louisiana Tech travels to LSU and Baylor in nonconference play, then faces Louisiana, Old Dominion, Troy, Arkansas State and Georgia Southern during the Sun Belt portion.

The Bulldogs do not need those nonconference games to win the league, but they can create wear and depth concerns before the conference race reaches its decisive stretch.

At +1000, Louisiana Tech sits too close to teams with stronger proven Sun Belt résumés. At +1200 or +1300, the newcomer becomes a more interesting speculative position.

Best Newcomer Value: Louisiana Tech at +1200 or better.

Arkansas State Sun Belt Championship Prediction

Arkansas State is the overlooked West Division contender around +1100 to +1200.

The Red Wolves finished third in the official preseason poll but led the entire conference with seven first-team All-Sun Belt selections.

Running back Kenyon Clay, wide receiver Chauncy Cobb and offensive lineman Tristian Smith give Arkansas State multiple proven offensive pieces, while the secondary also carries preseason recognition.

Cobb is particularly valuable because he contributes as a receiver, return specialist and all-purpose threat.

Arkansas State’s schedule includes early road games at TCU and Louisiana, but the Red Wolves later host South Alabama, ULM and Troy.

The November 28 home finale against Troy could become a West Division elimination game.

Arkansas State is not strong enough to replace Marshall as our main longshot, but +1200 is playable for bettors who want another West option beyond Louisiana and Troy.

Arkansas State Betting View: Secondary value at +1200 or better.

2026 Sun Belt Football Contender Tiers

The divisional structure makes the Sun Belt futures market easier to evaluate by separating the East race from the West race.

James Madison and Old Dominion form the top championship tier because both combine strong team projections with a direct path to the East crown.

Troy and Louisiana form the primary West tier, while Marshall, Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech provide the most credible longer-priced alternatives.

The remaining teams require either substantial improvement or a much larger price before becoming primary futures positions.

Best Sun Belt Football Win Total Bets

Win totals offer another way to bet the conference without requiring a team to survive the division race and win the championship game.

Old Dominion over 7.5 remains our favorite current position. The Monarchs won 10 games last season and can cash the over with eight victories even if James Madison ultimately wins the East.

Troy over 6.5 also remains attractive. The Trojans are overwhelming preseason West favorites and have reached three of the last four conference championship games.

Louisiana Tech over six is another option at the right price. The Bulldogs can reach seven wins without winning the division, although the nonconference schedule makes the wager more difficult than a standard Sun Belt six-win total.

Marshall under 7.5 remains our preferred fade. The Herd may be good enough to contend for the East, but road games against Penn State, James Madison, Old Dominion and Georgia Southern create an unusually demanding schedule.

Best Sun Belt Win Total Bet: Old Dominion over 7.5 wins.

Key Games That Could Decide the Sun Belt Championship Race

The title race begins early because James Madison visits Old Dominion on September 26.

That matchup may ultimately become the most important East Division game of the season. If ODU wins at home, James Madison may spend the rest of the conference schedule needing help in the standings.

Marshall visits JMU the following week, creating an extremely important two-game opening stretch for the defending champions.

The West race intensifies on October 17 when Troy visits Louisiana. That game pits the official preseason favorite against our preferred West value pick.

Troy then travels to James Madison on October 29 in a potential championship-game preview. Marshall visits Old Dominion two days later.

Louisiana Tech also gets direct opportunities to disrupt the West race, including road games at Louisiana and Troy and a late home game against Arkansas State.

When Is the 2026 Sun Belt Championship Game?

The 2026 Sun Belt Football Championship Game will be played Friday, December 4.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The East Division champion faces the West Division champion, and the divisional winner with the better overall conference record hosts the title game.

That home-field component is important for futures bettors. James Madison hosted last year’s championship after completing an unbeaten conference season and defeated Troy 31-14.

Can the Sun Belt Champion Make the College Football Playoff?

Yes. James Madison already proved it can happen.

The Dukes became the first Sun Belt program to reach the College Football Playoff after winning the conference in 2025.

The 2026-27 CFP remains a 12-team tournament. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions receive conference-champion access, while another guaranteed berth goes to the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt.

That means simply winning the Sun Belt is not enough. The champion must finish ahead of the champions from the other competing leagues in the CFP rankings.

James Madison has a schedule capable of producing that résumé. The Dukes face Liberty, San Diego State and UConn outside league play and would then need to navigate a difficult East slate.

Old Dominion also has useful nonconference opportunities against Virginia Tech and East Carolina. Troy travels to Missouri and Utah State, while Louisiana plays USC.

The ideal Sun Belt playoff candidate probably needs 11 or 12 regular-season wins, a conference championship and at least one notable nonconference victory.

Marshall remains +1100 at the longest current price, but some sportsbooks have shortened the Herd considerably. The original +1100 recommendation is therefore much stronger than a new bet below +800.
