Pick the under 52 – Commanders vs 49ers prediction, odds and best picks
Washington and San Francisco scored and allowed enough last season to make this a 47-point game. The market says 52. Take the under.
Is 52 too many for a 49ers team that has scored 30.8 a game this season? On my rule, yes, by more than four points. I pass on the side: San Francisco by 7.5 sits 1.97 points from my number, just inside my bar.
My numbers are plain arithmetic. For the total, I average each team’s scoring last season with what the other side allowed, then add the two. For the side, I take each team’s points differential per game from last season and subtract one from the other. Two points or more between my number and the market’s is a bet. Inside two points, I pass.
Pick: under 52
Washington scored 20.9 a game last season and San Francisco allowed 21.8. Averaged, that is 21.35 for Washington. San Francisco scored 25.7 and Washington allowed 26.5: 26.1 for the 49ers. Added, my total is 47.45.
The market’s total is 52. The gap is 4.55 points, more than twice my bar.
The two teams’ games went under 52 more often than over last season. Ten of Washington’s 17 finished under, six over and one landed on 52 exactly. Eleven of San Francisco’s 17 finished under and six over.
The venues point the same way. San Francisco’s eight home games last season averaged 45.25 points between the two teams, and five of the eight stayed under 52. Washington’s eight road games averaged 45.75, and six of the eight stayed under.
The price
Seven of the 11 US sportsbooks in the read of 18 October have the total at 52. BetRivers and FanDuel have 51.5; Bovada and DraftKings have 52.5. The under at 52 is priced from -108 at LowVig and William Hill to -110 at five books.
At -110 the bet needs to win 52.4% of the time to break even. DraftKings has the under at 52.5, but at -120, and that price needs 54.5%. Take 52 at -110 or better, or 52.5 at a fair price if you can find it.
DraftKings opened this total at 50.5 and has it at 52.5 now. The market has moved two points away from my number, which makes the under a better bet, not a worse one.
My rule takes the under at anything down to 49.5. At 49 I pass. The over does not become the bet until the total falls to 45.
The doubt, and why I overrule it
This season is the case against. San Francisco is 5-0 and has scored 154 points, 30.8 a game. Washington is 1-3-1 and has allowed 149, 29.8 a game, after 26.5 last season. Run the same arithmetic on this season’s five games and the total comes to 51.1, only 0.9 under the market.
Three of Washington’s five games this season went over 52: 57 points in a 37-20 loss at Dallas, 64 in a 33-31 home win over Seattle and 54 in a 27-27 tie with the Giants. Two of San Francisco’s five went over: 66 in a 36-30 win over Arizona and 61 in a 32-29 win at Seattle.
That is the real doubt. I overrule it on sample size. Five games against seventeen, and three of the 49ers’ five still stayed well under 52: 34 points in Melbourne against the Rams, 48 against Miami and 38 against Denver. I stay with the 17-game number.
The side: a pass
San Francisco went 12-5 last season, scoring 437 and allowing 371. That is plus 66, or plus 3.88 a game. Washington went 5-12, scoring 356 and allowing 451: minus 95, or minus 5.59 a game.
My number is San Francisco by 9.47. Nine of the 11 books have the 49ers -7.5, and BetUS and LowVig have -8. The gap at 7.5 is 1.97 points, three hundredths short of my bar. I pass.
This season’s games make a louder case for San Francisco: on those five alone, the 49ers are 19 points a game better than Washington. My rule uses last season’s 17 games, and on those the line is close enough to fair. At -7 the 49ers become a bet. Washington becomes a bet only at +11.5.
Our game records begin in 2025, and these two teams did not meet last season.
The moneyline
The median of 11 books has San Francisco at -417 and Washington at +320. With the margin taken out, that prices the Commanders to win 22.8% of the time.
I am not laying that. At -417 the 49ers have to win 80.7% of the time just to break even, and my rule prices the spread and the total, not the moneyline.
What would change it
The total, on my rule, only below 49.5. A total of 52.5 at a fair price makes it a better bet. Read both injury reports before you place it: nothing in this piece says who is available.
