Red Wings vs Canucks Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
No bet on the Red Wings at -170. Detroit is the right favourite in Vancouver, and our number has it only 3.0 points stronger than the price does.
The Detroit Red Wings are -170 and the Vancouver Canucks +142 at DraftKings. With the margin out, that is 60.4% for Detroit and 39.6% for Vancouver. Our number gives the Canucks 36.6%.
How 36.6% is reached
Our home win chance is the average of two 2025-26 rates: the home team’s win rate in its own arena and the visitor’s loss rate on the road. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins. Games at a neutral site are in neither half, and neither team played one.
The Canucks went 9-27-5 at Rogers Arena: 9 wins, 27 regulation losses and 5 after regulation, a 22.0% home win rate over 41 games. The Red Wings went 20-15-6 on the road and lost 21 of 41, a 51.2% road loss rate. The midpoint is 36.6% for Vancouver and 63.4% for Detroit.
The margin is the extra a book builds into both prices so the pair comes to more than 100%. At -170 and +142 they come to 104.3%. Taken out, the Red Wings are 60.4% and the Canucks 39.6%.
Thatcher Demko is on Vancouver’s injured reserve (ESPN injury list, read 22 October 2026, 14:10 UTC). He was not the Canucks’ starter in the season our number uses: he appeared in 20 of their 82 games, against 47 for Kevin Lankinen and 21 for Nikita Tolopilo. So the method is not re-run without him.
Every input is from 2025-26: 41 Vancouver home games and 41 Detroit road games. This season is not in the figures. The Canucks are 2-8-1, 1-3-0 at home, have lost their last five, and lost 6-3 at home to Carolina on Tuesday. Kevin Lankinen and Leevi Merilainen have played seven of their games each. The Red Wings are 3-3-3, 0-0-2 on the road, and lost 4-3 in a shootout in Seattle on Tuesday. John Gibson has played six of their games and Daniil Tarasov four.
Vancouver at home, Detroit on the road
Over the full season the Canucks at home scored 2.46 a game and allowed 3.90, a deficit of 1.44. The Red Wings on the road scored 2.78 and allowed 2.95, a deficit of 0.17.
The halves the method leaves out: Vancouver on the road went 16-22-3, a 39.0% win rate, scoring 2.80 and allowing 3.80. Detroit at home went 21-16-4, 51.2%, scoring 3.10 and allowing 3.34. Vancouver won more often away from Rogers Arena than in it.
Over the full season the two finished 34 points apart. Detroit went 41-31-10 with 92 points and was outscored by 17. Vancouver went 25-49-8 with 58 points and was outscored by 100. Neither made the playoffs.
Detroit went 18-5-10 in one-goal games and won 11 of the 21 that went past regulation. Vancouver went 15-9-8 and won 10 of its 18.
The Red Wings won both meetings in 2025-26. Their 4-0 win in Vancouver on 8 December is in both halves of our number. Their 5-1 win at home on 8 January is in neither.
Pick: No bet on the Red Wings -170
Pass on the moneyline. The gap is 3.0 points toward Detroit, against a threshold of 5.
The line read Red Wings -170 and Canucks +142 on 22 October 2026 at 14:10 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN, the same as it opened.
What changes it
A longer Detroit price. Against Vancouver at +142, the Red Wings become a bet at -138 or longer.
For Vancouver to become the bet, against Detroit at -170 the Canucks would have to drift to +243 or longer. They are +142.
ESPN names no starting goalie for Thursday. Vancouver lists Marco Rossi as day-to-day, and Jack Thompson, Akil Thomas and Mackenzie MacEachern on injured reserve besides Demko. Detroit lists J.T. Compher, Simon Edvinsson, Mason Appleton and Marco Kasper on injured reserve. Check the lineups before you bet.
The total and the puck line
The total is 6.5, over +100 and under -120. The Canucks’ games went over 6.5 in 46 of 82, the Red Wings’ in 37 of 82. Vancouver’s home games averaged 6.36 goals, Detroit’s road games 5.73.
That is 56.1% and 45.1%, an average of 50.6% for the over. With the margin removed the over is priced at 47.8% and the under at 52.2%, so our number leans to the over by 2.8 points, short of the 5 a lean needs. Pass on the total.
The puck line has Detroit -1.5 at +145 and Vancouver +1.5 at -175, which is 39.1% and 60.9% without the margin. The Red Wings won by two goals or more in 23 of 82 games, and the Canucks lost by two or more in 40 of 82. Averaged, Detroit -1.5 lands 38.4% of the time against 39.1% priced, a gap of 0.7 points, nothing there. The call on the game stays no bet.
