Giants at Commanders Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Washington lays 2.5 at home after finishing last season 37 points worse than New York. I am taking the Giants and the points.
My number is plain arithmetic. I take each team’s points differential per game from last season, subtract one from the other, and set the result against the spread. Two points or more between my number and the market’s is a bet. Inside two points, I pass.
Pick: Giants +2.5 (-110)
New York went 4-13 last season, scoring 381 and allowing 439. That is minus 58, or minus 3.4 a game. Washington went 5-12, scoring 356 and allowing 451. Minus 95, or minus 5.6 a game.
My number is the Giants by 2.2 points. The market has Washington by 2.5. That is a gap of 4.7 points, more than double my bar.
The standings hide it. The Giants won four games to Washington’s five, but they went 1-7 in games decided by a score or less. Washington went 2-5 in those. At 4-4 in those instead of 1-7, New York would have finished 7-10, two games ahead of Washington.
The doubt, and why I overrule it
I will not pretend the head-to-head helps. Washington beat New York twice last season: 21-6 at home on 7 September 2025, and 29-21 in New York on 14 December. Our game records begin in 2025, so those two are all there is.
Split by venue, the gap shrinks as well. Washington at home was minus 4.3 a game last season, scoring 23.6 and allowing 27.9. The Giants on the road were minus 6.0, scoring 22.8 and allowing 28.8, and they won one road game in nine. One against the other makes Washington about 1.7 points better, inside a point of the price.
Both arguments rest on smaller samples than the one I use. Two meetings, and eight or nine games a side against seventeen. The full-season number is the one I trust, and it says the Giants.
This season
New York is 2-1 and minus 9: a 28-20 home win over Dallas, a 28-6 loss at the Rams, and a 12-7 home win over Tennessee on Sunday. The offence has 46 points in three games, which is thin, and the one road trip went badly.
Washington is 1-2 and minus 17: a 24-22 loss at Philadelphia, a 37-20 loss at Dallas, then a 33-31 home win over Seattle. The Commanders have allowed 30.7 points a game. Last season’s problem, 26.5 allowed a game, has not been fixed. A defence that gives up 30 a week has no business laying points to anybody.
Where the price stands
This is an early line, read 13 days before kickoff. Three US sportsbooks, read on 28 September and last posted on 13 September, the first Sunday of the season. DraftKings has Washington -2.5, with the Giants at -115. BetUS has -2.5 at -110 both ways. William Hill has -3, with the Giants +3 at -120.
If you can find +3, as William Hill had it, that is the better ticket even at -120.
A bet on the Giants down to pick’em. The moment New York is favoured, pass. On my rule Washington does not become the bet until it is getting 4.5.
The total
Forty-eight and a half at DraftKings and BetUS, 49 at William Hill. No bet.
I run the total the same way: each team’s scoring last season against the other’s points allowed, averaged, then added. The Giants scored 22.4 and allowed 25.8. Washington scored 20.9 and allowed 26.5. That comes to 47.8, under a point from the market.
This season splits it. Washington’s three games have totalled 46, 57 and 64 points. The Giants’ have totalled 48, 34 and 19. Last season the Giants’ games went over 48.5 in 8 of 17 and Washington’s in 9. Nothing there clears two points.
The moneyline
DraftKings has the Giants +110 and Washington -130. With the margin taken out, that is about a 46 percent chance for New York.
My number has the Giants as the better team, so +110 is tempting. I would still rather have the two and a half, because these two played 15 one-score games between them last season, and two and a half points covers any Giants loss by one or two.
What would change it
A spread that has flipped to the Giants as favourites, and I pass. A move to Washington -3 or -3.5 makes it a better ticket. The full version of this page re-reads every book the week of the game.
Giants +2.5. Take the points, and the 3 if you can find it.
