Pick the Cardinals +8.5 – Lions at Cardinals prediction, odds and best picks
Take Arizona +8.5 against Detroit. Last season’s scores put this game near a field goal, and this season has not shown me a Detroit team that wins on the road by nine.
Watch Detroit away from home. Last season they played nine road games and won two of them by more than eight points. This number asks them to do it again.
How I make the call
Same working every week. Each team’s points per game from last season, averaged with what the other side allowed, gives me a score for the game. When that score and the market’s number are a field goal or more apart, and I can see in the results why the market sits where it does, I bet.
Both halves hold here. Detroit scored 28.3 a game last season and Arizona allowed 28.7, so Detroit comes out at 28.5. Arizona scored 20.9 and Detroit allowed 24.3, so Arizona comes out at 22.6. That is Detroit by 5.9 on a neutral field, and about 3.4 once Arizona gets two and a half for home field. The market says 8.5 at DraftKings and 8 at Caesars.
Those are the only two books with a price on file, and both posted it on 13 September. Nobody had moved it when I read it on 28 September. It is an early line and it gets read again the week of the game.
The tell
Arizona went 3-14 last season. That record is why the number is big. Look at the margins, though, and it is a different team: 10 of their 17 games were decided by eight points or fewer, and they lost eight of those.
At home it was the same story. Arizona went 1-7 there, and only two of the seven losses were by more than eight, 41-22 to San Francisco and 45-17 to the Rams. This season they have played one home game and lost it 31-7 to Seattle. So Arizona has lost at home by nine or more in three of nine games since the start of last season.
What this season adds
Detroit is 2-1 and has scored 31 in every game. They beat New Orleans 31-30 and the Jets 31-24 at home, and lost 41-31 in Buffalo. They have allowed 95 points in three games, 31.7 a game.
Arizona is 1-2. They won 26-14 at the Chargers, lost 31-7 to Seattle at home and lost 36-30 in San Francisco.
This is the part that decides it. Detroit has not won a game by more than seven this season. Put this season’s three games through the same working and it comes out at Detroit by less than a point in Arizona. A defence giving up 31 a game does not lay 8.5 on the road, and I can’t see what in these results puts Detroit nine points clear.
Last season on the road
Detroit went 4-5 away last season, scoring 24.6 a game and allowing 25.4. The two big road wins were 37-24 in Cincinnati and 44-22 in Washington. The other seven were two one-score wins, two one-score losses and three losses by 13 or 14.
That is a team that was about even away from home. The market is pricing them like a team that wins there by nine. I would take the points and let Detroit prove it.
The total
The same working gives a total of about 51, against 48.5 at both books. That is 2.6 points, short of the field goal I need, so there is no bet on the total.
It is closer than it looks on paper, though. Detroit’s three games this season finished on 61, 72 and 55 points. If that holds up through Week 4, the full page may come back to it.
What would change the call
If this comes in to Detroit -6 or shorter, the gap drops below a field goal and I pass. Caesars’ 8 is still a bet, at -115; the 8.5 at DraftKings is the better number, at -110.
These two did not meet last season, and Nucleus holds nothing before 2025, so there is no head-to-head record to lean on. This page prices no injury news either. Check the report and the current number before you bet.
