Washington is priced like a 60% favourite on numbers that make it 55%. Take the Penguins at +142.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are +142 against the Washington Capitals at -170 at DraftKings. With the margin removed, that is a 39.6% chance for the Penguins. Our number is 45.1%. The gap is 5.5 points, and the threshold for a bet is 5.

How the number is built

The method is one clause: our home win chance is the average of the home team’s 2025-26 home win rate and the visitor’s 2025-26 road loss rate, with a win in overtime or a shootout counted as a win.

The Capitals went 25-11-5 at home last season. That is 25 wins, 11 regulation losses and 5 losses after regulation, a 61.0% home win rate over 41 games. The Penguins went 21-12-8 on the road, so they lost 20 of 41, a 48.8% road loss rate. The average of 61.0 and 48.8 is 54.9 for the Capitals, which leaves 45.1 for the Penguins.

The market’s figure is the moneyline with the margin taken out. The margin is the few points a book builds into both prices so that they add up to more than 100%. Out of -170 and +142 it leaves the Capitals at 60.4% and the Penguins at 39.6%.

It is a new season. Rosters change over a summer, and nothing on this page measures what changed. The evidence in hand is last season: 41 home games for Washington and 41 road games for Pittsburgh.

The Capitals at home, the Penguins on the road

At home, the Capitals scored 3.39 goals a game and allowed 2.66. The Penguins on the road scored 3.49 and allowed 3.05. Pittsburgh scored 0.10 a game more away from home than Washington did in its own building. Washington’s edge was at the other end, where it allowed 0.39 fewer.

Washington was a different team on the road. Its road record was 18-19-4, seven fewer wins than at home, and a 43.9% road win rate. The method uses only the home half, and 61.0% is the stronger of the two. Pittsburgh went the other way: 21 road wins against 20 at home.

Across the full season the Penguins finished 41-25-16 with 98 points and outscored opponents by 0.30 goals a game (3.57 scored, 3.27 allowed). Sixteen of their losses came after regulation, and 23 of their games went past it. They lost their one playoff series, 4-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers. The Capitals finished 43-30-9 with 95 points, outscored opponents by 0.23 a game, and played no playoff games.

The teams met three times in 2025-26. Pittsburgh won 5-3 at home on 6 November. Washington won the last two, 6-3 in Pittsburgh on 11 April and 3-0 at home on 12 April. Three games prove nothing about a fourth.

The price

The Capitals opened at -162 and the Penguins at +136. At those prices the market had Washington at 59.3%, a gap of 4.4 points, and the call was a pass. Read on 28 September 2026 at 18:24 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN, they were -170 and +142. The move toward Washington is what opened the gap to 5.5.

Pick: Penguins +142

Pittsburgh Penguins moneyline at +142. Our number is 45.1%, the market’s is 39.6%, and the 5.5-point gap clears the 5-point threshold by half a point.

That is a thin margin, and it is stated as thin. It rests on 82 games, 41 at home for the Capitals and 41 on the road for the Penguins, all from last season.

What changes it

The price. With the book’s margin at today’s size, the Penguins at +139 leave a gap of 5.0 points and the bet stands. At +138 the gap is 4.8, and the call becomes a pass. A return to the opening +136 is a pass.

The summer is the other thing. A season of home and road results says how these two teams played in 2025-26, and nothing on this page says who is in either lineup on 7 October. Check the lineups before you bet. The full page re-reads the line on the day.
