Rays vs Guardians Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
No bet on Game 5. The series is tied 2-2 after Tampa Bay won Game 4, and the market has moved past our number: it now makes the Rays a bigger favorite than we do, by less than it takes to bet the Guardians.
DraftKings has the Rays at -128 and the Guardians at +106 for Sunday’s game at Progressive Field, 5:00 PM ET. Those two prices carry a 4.7-point margin. Remove it and the market reads Tampa Bay 53.6% and Cleveland 46.4%. Ours reads Tampa Bay 52.1% and Cleveland 47.9%. That leaves the Guardians 1.5 points better than their price says, and we bet at 5.
What Game 4 changed
Tampa Bay won Game 4, 7-3, at Progressive Field on Saturday night, a day late after rain postponed Friday’s game. That evens the series at two games each. Cleveland won Game 1, 7-3, and Tampa Bay won Game 2, 3-1, both at Tropicana Field; Cleveland won Game 3, 3-2, in Cleveland.
Our Game 4 page was no bet: “No bet at Rays -114 or Guardians -106.” Its lean was to Tampa Bay, by 1.2 points, short of the 5 it takes, so there was nothing to win or lose. It also passed on the total of 6.5, and the game finished with 10 runs.
Game 4 is not in our number. It reads the 162 games each club played in the 2026 regular season and nothing after them, so it reads 52.1% for the Rays at Progressive Field again, the same as for Games 3 and 4.
The market is what moved. At our last Game 4 read, at 13:54 UTC on 17 October, it made Tampa Bay 50.9%. For Game 5 it makes the Rays 53.6%, enough to carry it past our 52.1%, so the lean has changed sides, from the Rays to the Guardians. The page does not say why the price moved; the Game 4 result and the starters are both possible reasons, and neither is measured here.
How Game 4 went
Cleveland scored first, a run in the first inning. Tampa Bay tied it in the third, went ahead in the sixth and scored three in the seventh for a 5-1 lead. Cleveland got two back in the bottom of the seventh, and the Rays added two in the ninth.
Nick Martinez started for the Rays and allowed one run on two hits over five and a third innings, with three strikeouts and two walks, and got the win. Shawn Armstrong opened for the Guardians with a scoreless first, Foster Griffin followed with three and two-thirds innings and one run, and Daniel Espino took the loss. Yandy Diaz homered for Tampa Bay and Travis Bazzana for Cleveland. The Rays had 11 hits to Cleveland’s 8, and Cleveland made 2 errors to Tampa Bay’s none.
How the number is built
Three steps, the same on every baseball page. Rate each club on the runs it scored and allowed in the 2026 regular season, put the two rates against each other, then add the edge home teams earned across the league this year.
Tampa Bay scored 736 runs and allowed 650 in 162 games. Runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that figure plus runs allowed to the same power, gives the Rays 55.7%. Their 98-64 record is a 60.5% rate. Cleveland scored 678 and allowed 667: 50.7% by runs, 52.5% by an 85-77 record.
On a neutral field those rates make Cleveland 45.1% to win. Home teams went 1,284-1,145 in the 2026 regular season, a 52.9% rate, and with that added the Guardians reach 47.9%. The Rays keep 52.1%: over a season the gap between the two clubs is larger than what home field is worth.
The starters
ESPN lists Drew Rasmussen for Tampa Bay and Parker Messick for Cleveland (read 18 October 2026, 06:09 UTC). Both have started once in this series: Rasmussen in Game 1, Messick in Game 2.
Rasmussen went 16-5 in the 2026 regular season with a 2.67 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP over 30 starts and 172 innings, with 174 strikeouts and 32 walks. He throws right-handed. In Game 1 he went six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits, two of them home runs, with seven strikeouts and no walks, and did not get a decision; Cleveland won 7-3.
Messick went 12-9 with a 2.56 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP over 32 starts and 186 1/3 innings, with 193 strikeouts and 49 walks. He throws left-handed. In Game 2 he went five innings and allowed three runs, none of them earned, on six hits, with three strikeouts and two walks, and took the loss; Tampa Bay won 3-1.
The number on this page does not change with a name: the method rates clubs on a full season of runs, whoever pitched. The market does price the starters. The price is what decides whether this becomes a bet.
The season behind it
The Guardians went 41-40 at home in the regular season, scoring 4.16 runs a game and allowing 4.31. The Rays went 43-38 on the road with 4.48 scored and 4.05 allowed. The method uses the full season for both, because a split cuts each sample in half.
The clubs met six times in the regular season and Tampa Bay won five. Three of those games were in Cleveland, from 27 to 29 April, and the Rays won two of them. Six games are too few to move a rate built on 162, and they are already inside each club’s season totals.
The price
DraftKings, via ESPN, opened Game 5 with the Rays at -128 and the Guardians at +107. At 06:09 UTC on 18 October it had the Rays at -128 and the Guardians at +106.
The market’s percentages here are the moneyline with its margin removed. The margin was 4.7 points at this read, and the two prices under the pick are worked out with it.
Pick: No bet
No bet at Rays -128 or Guardians +106. The lean is to Cleveland, by 1.5 points: ours is 47.9% for the Guardians and the market’s is 46.4%. The threshold is 5.
The Rays become a bet at +103 or longer. The Guardians become one at +123 or longer. At any price between those two, pass.
What changes it
The price is the first thing. This read is about 15 hours before first pitch. Cleveland would have to drift from +106 to +123 before it is worth a bet. Tampa Bay would have to go from -128 to +103, past even money.
The starters are the second. If either club changes its starter, the market may move and our number will not. Compare the Guardians price with +123, and the Rays price with +103, before taking a side.
The total
The total is 6.5, with the over at -114 and the under at -106. It opened at 6.5, over -120 and under +100. Pass on the total.
In the regular season the Guardians went over 6.5 in 102 of 162 games and the Rays in 104. Those counts include every pitcher either club used all year. A postseason total is set on the two starters of the day, which a season count cannot see, so we pass on every postseason total.
