January, all unders

Here is the one to remember. From 29 December to 30 January, ten straight Iona games went under, all nine January games among them. Totals in that run sat between 140.5 and 153.5, and the Gaels’ games kept finishing short of them. Across the season Iona went under 20 times and over 12, an under rate behind just 32 Division I teams and level with three.

Iona scored 73.84 a game and allowed 73.12, and finished 18-14. February was the exception: four of its seven games went over, three of them against totals of 140.5 or lower.

With points, a cover

Iona was an underdog 12 times and covered nine, a rate 17 teams beat and six tied. It won six of them, the longest at Vermont, 83-78 at +210, and over Oregon State, 91-84 at +155 on a neutral floor. The moneyline as underdogs made 3.61 units over ten priced games. As favorites it lost 1.78 over 19, and the Gaels covered 10 of 19.

Home and away covered at the same rate, 9 of 14 each, for 19 of 31 overall; 28 teams did better and three matched it.

The early money

November and December were worth 5.14 units together. January and February gave back 3.01. Two of the three shortest-priced losses came on the road: 72-68 at Rider at -325 in January and 70-68 at Niagara at -198 in February. Mount St. Mary’s beat Iona twice, the second time 83-76 at Iona with the Gaels at -185.

The season ended in the MAAC tournament’s first round, 91-80 to Sacred Heart, with Iona favored at -170.
