Buccaneers at Cowboys Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Dallas lays 3.5 to a team that finished last season with the better differential. I am taking the Buccaneers and the points.
First, the one I got wrong. On Sunday I took Tampa Bay +1.5 at home against Minnesota, and the Buccaneers lost 23-16. That is 0-3 for them this season, and I am going straight back in on the Thursday night game anyway. Here is why.
My number is plain arithmetic. I take each team’s points differential per game from last season, subtract one from the other, and set the result against the spread. Two points or more between my number and the market’s is a bet. Inside two points, I pass.
Pick: Buccaneers +3.5 (-110)
Tampa Bay went 8-9 last season, scoring 380 and allowing 411. That is minus 31, or minus 1.8 a game. Dallas went 7-9-1, scoring 471 and allowing 511. Minus 40, or minus 2.4 a game.
On those figures Tampa Bay is the better team by about half a point, and the market has Dallas by three and a half. The gap is four points. That clears my bar by two.
Why would the price be that far off? The Cowboys score. They put up 27.7 a game last season, the most of these two by more than five points. The trouble is they gave up 30.1, and a defence that allows 30 does not earn a three-and-a-half-point cushion against anybody.
Last season’s margins back the points as well. Twelve of Tampa Bay’s 17 games finished within seven points either way. Dallas lost by more than 3.5 in 8 of its 17.
The doubt, and why I overrule it
Split last season by venue and the case gets thinner. Dallas at home scored 29.9 a game and allowed 30.4, minus half a point. Tampa Bay on the road scored 21.0 and allowed 24.7, minus 3.7. Put one against the other and Dallas comes out about 3.2 points better, which is almost exactly the price.
That is a real argument, and it rests on eight Dallas home games and nine Tampa Bay road games. The full seasons are 17 games each, and I would rather trust twice the sample.
Then there is this season. Tampa Bay is 0-3: 33-27 at Cincinnati, 23-19 at home to Cleveland, 23-16 at home to Minnesota. Every one of those losses came by seven points or fewer, and the first two by six and four.
Dallas is 1-2: a 28-20 loss at the Giants, a 37-20 home win over Washington, then a 34-31 home loss to Baltimore on Sunday. Three games is not a season, but none of it says Dallas should be laying more than a field goal.
Where the price stands
This is an early line, read ten days before kickoff. The three US sportsbooks in the read have Dallas -3.5 at DraftKings and BetUS and -3 at William Hill, where the Cowboys cost -120. Those prices were read on 28 September and were last posted on 13 September, the first Sunday of the season, before either team had a result this season.
That matters. The books set this number before Tampa Bay went 0-3, and I cannot tell you where it has gone since. If you find 4 or 4.5, that is a better ticket.
A bet on Tampa Bay down to +1.5. At +1 or less, pass. On my rule, Dallas does not become the bet until it is getting three.
The total
Fifty-two and a half at two of the three books, and 51 at William Hill. No bet.
I run the total the same way: each team’s scoring last season against the other’s points allowed, averaged, then added. Tampa Bay scored 22.4 and allowed 24.2. Dallas scored 27.7 and allowed 30.1. That lands on 52.2, three tenths off the market.
The two teams point opposite ways. Dallas games went over 52.5 in 10 of 17 last season and averaged 57.8 points. Tampa Bay games went over in only 5 of 17. Dallas has totalled 48, 57 and 65 this season. Tampa Bay has totalled 60, 42 and 39.
With the number sitting on the market’s and the history split in two, I have nothing on the total.
Head to head and the moneyline
These two did not meet last season, and our game records begin in 2025, so there is no head-to-head to lean on.
DraftKings has Tampa Bay +170 to win outright and Dallas -204. With the margin taken out, that is about a 36 percent chance for the Buccaneers. On a half-point edge I do not need the moneyline. The points are the bet.
What would change it
A spread that moves to Dallas -1 or shorter takes my edge away, and I pass. A move the other way only makes the ticket better. The full version of this page re-reads every book the week of the game.
