Rays vs Guardians Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Take the Rays in Game 3 at Progressive Field. The market has made Cleveland the favorite at home, and our number still has Tampa Bay as the better club by enough to cover the trip.
DraftKings has the Guardians at -131 and the Rays at +109. Those two prices carry a 4.6-point margin. Remove it and the market reads Cleveland 54.2%, Tampa Bay 45.8%. Ours reads 47.9% and 52.1%. That leaves the Rays 6.3 points better than their price says, and we bet at 5.
What the first two games changed
The series is tied 1-1. Cleveland won Game 1, 7-3, and Tampa Bay won Game 2, 3-1, both at Tropicana Field.
Our Game 2 page called no bet: “No bet at Rays -137 or Guardians +114.” Its lean was to Tampa Bay, by 2.4 points, and Tampa Bay won at a price we did not take. It also passed on the total of 7, and the game finished with 4 runs.
Neither game is in our number. It reads the 162 games each club played in the 2026 regular season and nothing after them. For Games 1 and 2 it read 57.7% for the Rays at home. It reads 52.1% now, and the whole of that move is the home edge changing sides with the venue.
The market has moved further. At our three reads it made Tampa Bay 59.9%, then 55.3%, now 45.8%. Before Game 1 the price sat 2.2 points above ours on the Rays. Before Game 2 it sat 2.4 below. It now sits 6.3 below, past the threshold for the first time in this series.
How Game 2 went
Tampa Bay scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning, and none of the three was earned. Parker Messick was charged with them over five innings and took the loss. Cleveland made one error to Tampa Bay’s none.
Freddy Peralta went six scoreless innings for the Rays, allowing four hits and two walks with six strikeouts, and got the win. Cleveland’s run came in the seventh, charged to Kevin Kelly. Bryan Baker got the last three outs for the save. The Rays had 7 hits to the Guardians’ 6.
How the number is built
Three steps, the same on every baseball page. Rate each club on the runs it scored and allowed in the 2026 regular season, put the two rates against each other, then add the edge home teams earned across the league this year.
Tampa Bay scored 736 runs and allowed 650 in 162 games. Runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that figure plus runs allowed to the same power, gives the Rays 55.7%. Their 98-64 record is a 60.5% rate. Cleveland scored 678 and allowed 667: 50.7% by runs, 52.5% by an 85-77 record.
On a neutral field those rates make Cleveland 45.1% to win. Home teams went 1,284-1,145 in the 2026 regular season, a 52.9% rate, and with that added the Guardians reach 47.9%. The Rays keep 52.1%: the gap between the two clubs over a season is larger than what home field is worth.
The starters
ESPN lists Gavin Williams for Cleveland and Griffin Jax for Tampa Bay. Both throw right-handed.
Williams made 32 starts in the 2026 regular season: 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over 184.1 innings, 248 strikeouts and 61 walks. Jax pitched in 34 games, 23 of them starts: 8-10 with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 112.1 innings, 116 strikeouts and 35 walks. His line mixes starts and relief, so it is not a starter’s line alone.
Neither line is in the 52.1%. The method rates clubs on a full season of runs, whoever pitched, and no number on this page moves with the name. The market does price the starter, and a pitcher who worked 112.1 innings against one who worked 184.1 is a difference it may be pricing. That is a reading, and we have not measured it.
The season behind it
The Guardians went 41-40 at home in the regular season, scoring 4.16 runs a game and allowing 4.31. The Rays went 43-38 on the road with 4.48 scored and 4.05 allowed. The method uses the full season for both, because a split cuts each sample in half.
The clubs met six times in the regular season and Tampa Bay won five. Three of those games were in Cleveland, from 27 to 29 April, and the Rays won two of them. Six games are too few to move a rate built on 162, and they are already inside each club’s season totals.
The price
The Guardians opened at -133 and the Rays at +110. At 06:27 UTC on 14 October DraftKings, via ESPN, had them at -131 and +109.
The market’s percentages here are the moneyline with its margin removed. The margin was 4.6 points at this read, and the two prices under the pick are worked out with it.
Pick: Rays +109
Bet the Rays at +109. Ours is 52.1% for Tampa Bay and the market’s is 45.8%, and 6.3 points clears the 5-point threshold.
The bet holds at +104 or longer. At +103 or shorter the gap is under 5 and it is a pass. The Guardians would need +123 or longer to be a bet, and at -131 they are nowhere near it.
What changes it
The price is the first thing. This read is about 39 and a half hours before first pitch. The Rays have 5 cents of room, from +109 to +104, before the bet is gone.
The starters are the second. A change of either would move the market and would not move our number. If either name changes, compare the new Rays price with +104 before taking it.
The total
The total is 6.5, down from 7 at the open. The over is -120 and the under +100, from -105 and -114 at the open. Pass on the total.
In the regular season the Guardians went over 6.5 in 102 of 162 games and the Rays in 104. Those counts include every pitcher either club used all year. A postseason total is set on the two starters of the night, which a season count cannot see, so we pass on every postseason total.
