Penguins vs Avalanche Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

Bet the Penguins at +180. Colorado should win more often than not, but our number gives Pittsburgh 44.5% against the price’s 34.3%, a 10.2-point gap.

The Colorado Avalanche are -218 and the Pittsburgh Penguins +180 at DraftKings. With the margin out, that prices Colorado at 65.7% and Pittsburgh at 34.3%. Our number has the Avalanche at 55.5%. Same favourite, different size: the price asks for a Colorado home record better than the one the Avalanche had.

Where 55.5% comes from

The number is the average of two 2025-26 rates: the home team’s win rate in its own arena and the visitor’s loss rate on the road. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins. Neutral-site games are left out of both. Colorado had none; Pittsburgh’s two games in Stockholm are out of its road half.

The Avalanche went 26-9-6 at Ball Arena: 26 wins, 9 regulation losses, 6 after regulation, a 63.4% home win rate over 41 games. The Penguins went 21-12-7 on the road and lost 19 of 40, a 47.5% road loss rate. Average the two and Colorado is 55.5%, Pittsburgh 44.5%.

Pittsburgh’s road record is what moves the number. The Penguins won more than half their road games last season, and a +180 price reads like a team that rarely did.

The margin is the extra a book puts into both prices so they add to more than 100%. At -218 and +180 they add to 104.3%. Taken out, the Avalanche are 65.7% and the Penguins 34.3%.

There is a fair objection, and it should be stated. Colorado was 29-7-5 on the road, better than at home, and the method uses only the home half. That is the design: the same two rates on every page, never the half that suits the pick. Our inputs are 41 Colorado home games and 40 Pittsburgh road games, all from 2025-26.

This season has started for both and none of it is in the figures. Pittsburgh is 3-3-1 and lost 5-3 in Chicago on Tuesday. Colorado is 4-2-1 and lost 3-2 to Dallas in a shootout at home on Wednesday, so the Avalanche have a day off before this one.

Colorado at home, Pittsburgh on the road

The goals back the Penguins’ road record. Pittsburgh scored 3.55 a game on the road and allowed 3.08, a surplus of 0.47. Colorado at home scored 3.83 and allowed 2.63, a surplus of 1.20. The Avalanche are the stronger side in this split too; the question is only whether they are as strong as the price says.

The other halves, which the method does not use: Colorado on the road went 29-7-5, a 70.7% win rate, scoring 3.54 and allowing 2.32. Pittsburgh at home went 19-13-8, 47.5%, scoring 3.65 and allowing 3.58.

Over the full season the gap between the two was wide. The Avalanche finished 55-16-11 with 121 points and outscored opponents by 99. They swept Los Angeles 4-0, beat Minnesota 4-1, then were swept 4-0 by Vegas. The Penguins finished 41-25-16 with 98 points, outscored opponents by 25, and lost their only playoff series, 4-2 to Philadelphia.

Pittsburgh lived in close games. The Penguins went past regulation 23 times and won 7 of them, and went 12-7-16 in one-goal games. Colorado won 41 of its 55 games by two goals or more, went 14-4-11 in one-goal games, and won 7 of the 18 that went past 60 minutes.

The two teams met twice in 2025-26 and split. Pittsburgh won 7-2 at Ball Arena on 16 March, and that game is the only meeting in our number: it is one of Colorado’s 41 home games and one of Pittsburgh’s 40 road games. Colorado won 6-2 in Pittsburgh on 24 March, which is in neither half.

Pick: Penguins +180

Bet the Penguins on the moneyline at +180. The gap is 10.2 points toward Pittsburgh, against a threshold of 5.

The line opened at Avalanche -245 and Penguins +200 and has moved toward Pittsburgh since. It read -218 and +180 on 15 October 2026 at 20:30 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN.

What kills the bet

A shorter Penguins price. At +154 or longer Pittsburgh is a bet whatever Colorado is priced at. Against -218, it still clears the bar down to +123. The line has already come in from +200, so this is the number to watch.

For the Avalanche to become the bet, they would have to come out to -102 or longer. They are -218.

An underdog at this price loses more often than it wins; the case is that +180 pays more than the risk warrants. Lineups are the other unknown, and this page states nothing about who plays for either team on 16 October. Check both before you bet.

The total and the puck line

The total is 6.5, over -118 and under -102. The Avalanche’s games went over 6.5 in 32 of 82, the Penguins’ in 47 of 82. Colorado’s home games averaged 6.46 goals, Pittsburgh’s road games 6.63.

That is 39.0% and 57.3%, an average of 48.2% for the over. With the margin removed the over is priced at 51.7% and the under at 48.3%, so our number leans to the under, by less than 4 points. Short of 5. Pass on the total.

The puck line points the same way as the pick. Colorado is -1.5 at +114 and Pittsburgh +1.5 at -135, which is 44.9% and 55.1% without the margin. The Avalanche won by two goals or more in 41 of 82 games. The Penguins lost by two or more in 18 of 82. Averaged, Colorado -1.5 lands 36.0% of the time against 44.9% priced, a gap of 8.9 points toward Penguins +1.5 at -135. Our method bets the moneyline only, so this stays a lean, on the same side as the pick. One bet on this game: the Penguins at +180.
