Bills at Rams prediction: Take the under 54.5
The total is about four points too high for what these two teams scored and allowed last season. The pick is under 54.5, and the spread is a pass.
Two US books have a price on file, both posted on 11 September and not updated when I read them on 28 September at 15:10 UTC. DraftKings has the Rams -3 and a total of 53.5. Caesars has the Rams -3.5 and a total of 54.5. This is an early line, and it will be read again the week of the game.
The number the argument rests on
My method for the total adds each team’s expected points, taken as the average of what it scored a game and what the other side allowed a game in 2025. Buffalo comes out at 24.35, the average of its 28.3 scored and the Rams’ 20.4 allowed. The Rams come out at 26.0, the average of their 30.5 scored and Buffalo’s 21.5 allowed. That is 50.35.
Against Caesars’ 54.5 the edge is 4.15 points. Against DraftKings’ 53.5 it is 3.15. My threshold is two points; below two I pass, because an estimate built on season rates carries more error than that.
Pick: under 54.5
Take the 54.5 at Caesars, priced at -115. The 53.5 at DraftKings, -110, clears the threshold too, and is the number to take if the higher one has gone.
Last season’s game totals point the same way. Buffalo’s games went over 53.5 in 4 of 17. The Rams’ went over in 7 of 17. That is 11 of 34 between them, about one in three.
A cross-check with a different cut of the same data comes out lower still. Using the Rams’ home figures (28.9 scored, 18.1 allowed) and Buffalo’s road figures (25.0 scored, 19.2 allowed) in the same formula gives 45.6. I do not bet the split figure, because eight games a side is a thin sample, but it does not argue for the over.
What this season says, and what it cannot
Buffalo is 3-0. It won 36-31 at Houston, beat Detroit 41-31 and beat the Chargers 24-16. Those games totalled 67, 72 and 40 points.
The Rams are 1-2. They lost 27-7 to San Francisco, beat the Giants 28-6 and lost 30-26 at Denver. Those totalled 34, 34 and 56.
Three of the six went over 53.5. Put each team’s three games this season through the same formula and the total comes to 50.5, within a fifth of a point of last season’s figure. Three games prove nothing on their own; here they happen to agree.
The spread: no bet
The side method is half the gap between the two per-game differentials, plus two and a half points for home field. Buffalo was +116 over 17 games in 2025, +6.8 a game. The Rams were +172, +10.1 a game. Half the 3.3-point gap is 1.65. Add home field and the Rams are 4.15-point favourites.
The market has them at 3 and 3.5. That is an edge of 1.15 points at most, under the threshold. This season’s three games would put Buffalo ahead by 1.7, which is no help either. The moneyline, Buffalo +142 at DraftKings and +160 at Caesars, carries the same disagreement and I leave it alone.
Where the data runs out
These two did not meet in 2025, and Nucleus holds nothing before that season, so there is no head-to-head record to show. The total above rests on 17-game rates alone.
This page also prices no injury news. A missing starting quarterback on either side would move the total more than anything here, and the prices are seventeen days old. Read both before you bet.
What would change the call
The edge survives a lot. At 53 it is still 2.65 points and still a bet. At 52 it falls to 1.65, below the threshold, and the total becomes a pass too.
Pick: under 54.5.
