The Sabres should win this, and -218 already says so. No bet.
The Buffalo Sabres are -218 against the Chicago Blackhawks at +180 at DraftKings. With the margin removed, that is a 65.7% chance for the Sabres. Our number is 63.4%. The gap is 2.3 points, and a side is a bet only when the gap is 5 or more.
How the number is built
One clause: our home win chance is the average of the home team’s 2025-26 home win rate and the visitor’s 2025-26 road loss rate, where a win in overtime or a shootout counts as a win.
The Sabres went 26-10-5 at home, meaning 26 wins, 10 regulation losses and 5 losses after regulation. That is a 63.4% home win rate over 41 games. The Blackhawks went 15-20-6 on the road and lost 26 of 41, also 63.4%. Both halves land on the same figure, so the average is 63.4% for the Sabres and 36.6% for the Blackhawks.
The margin is the few points a book builds into both prices so that they add to more than 100%. Removed from -218 and +180, it leaves the Sabres at 65.7% and the Blackhawks at 34.3%.
It is a new season. Rosters change over a summer, and this page has no measure of what changed. Last season is the only evidence in hand: 41 home games for the Sabres and 41 road games for the Blackhawks. The Sabres play at Columbus on 1 October, and the Blackhawks at Vegas on 29 September and at Utah on 1 October. None of those games is in these figures.
The Sabres at home, the Blackhawks on the road
The Sabres at home scored 3.63 goals a game and allowed 2.90. The Blackhawks on the road scored 2.59 and allowed 3.41. That is 1.04 goals a game more scored by the home side and 0.51 fewer allowed.
The Sabres finished 50-23-9 with 109 points and outscored opponents by 0.57 goals a game. In the playoffs they beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 and lost 4-3 to the Montreal Canadiens. The Blackhawks finished 29-39-14 with 72 points, outscored by 0.75 a game, and did not reach the playoffs.
The Sabres won both meetings in 2025-26: 9-3 at home on 22 November and 5-1 at Chicago on 14 April. Two games are a small sample, and the method does not use them.
Pick: no bet
No bet on the moneyline. The gap is 2.3 points against a 5-point threshold, and it points toward the Blackhawks, not the favourite.
The Sabres opened at -218 and the Blackhawks at +180, and neither had moved when read on 24 September 2026 at 04:32 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN.
What changes it
A longer price on the Blackhawks. At +217 or longer, they are a bet whatever the Sabres are priced at. The Sabres become a bet at -140 or better, a long way from -218.
The lineups are unknown here. This page states nothing about who plays on 3 October. Check the lineups before you bet.
The total and the puck line
The total is 5.5, over -130 and under +110. The Sabres’ games went over 5.5 in 50 of 82 and the Blackhawks’ in 42 of 82. The Sabres’ home games averaged 6.53 goals, the Blackhawks’ road games 6.00.
The two over rates, 61.0% and 51.2%, average 56.1%. The over at -130 is priced at 54.3% with the margin removed, 1.8 points below. Pass on the total.
The puck line has the Sabres -1.5 at +114 and the Blackhawks +1.5 at -135. The Sabres won by two goals or more in 35 of 82 games, and the Blackhawks lost by two or more in 31 of 82. Averaged, Sabres -1.5 comes in 40.2% of the time against 44.9% priced. That is 4.7 points toward the Blackhawks, short of 5. Pass on the puck line.
