Stars at Sabres Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
We make Buffalo 52.4% against Dallas, close to a coin flip. Neither side is a bet as the favourite: the Sabres need +111 or better, the Stars +135 or better.
No line had been posted for this game when we read the market on 28 September 2026. So this page gives our number and the prices at which it turns into a bet. Our number is 52.4% for the Buffalo Sabres and 47.6% for the Dallas Stars. A side is a bet when the market’s figure sits at least 5 points below ours.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our home win chance is the average of the home team’s 2025-26 home win rate and the visitor’s 2025-26 road loss rate, with a win in overtime or a shootout counted as a win.
The Sabres went 26-10-5 at home last season. That is 26 wins, 10 regulation losses and 5 losses after regulation, a 63.4% home win rate over 41 games. The Stars went 24-9-8 on the road, so they lost 17 of 41, a 41.5% road loss rate. The average of the two unrounded rates is 52.44, which rounds to 52.4 for the Sabres and leaves 47.6 for the Stars.
It is a new season. Rosters change over a summer, and nothing on this page measures what changed. The evidence in hand is last season: 41 home games for Buffalo and 41 road games for Dallas.
The Sabres at home, the Stars on the road
These two teams had the same splits. Both won 26 of 41 at home, a 63.4% rate, and 24 of 41 on the road, 58.5%. Both finished with 50 wins. The only thing separating them in our number is which one is at home.
The goals agree that it is close. Buffalo at home scored 3.63 a game and allowed 2.90. Dallas on the road scored 3.51 and allowed 2.78. Each outscored opponents by 0.73 a game in the half that counts here.
Across the full season the Stars finished 50-20-12 with 112 points and outscored opponents by 0.64 goals a game (3.40 scored, 2.76 allowed). They were strong in close games, 28-6-12 in one-goal games, and 8 of their 17 road losses came after regulation. They lost their one playoff series, 4-2 to the Minnesota Wild.
The Sabres finished 50-23-9 with 109 points and outscored opponents by 0.57 a game (3.51 scored, 2.94 allowed). They won by two goals or more in 35 of their 82 games. In the playoffs they beat the Boston Bruins 4-2, then lost 4-3 to the Montreal Canadiens.
The teams met twice in 2025-26 and each won on the road. Buffalo won 4-1 in Dallas on 31 December. Dallas won 4-3 in a shootout in Buffalo on 15 April. Two games prove nothing.
Pick: Sabres at +111 or better, Stars at +135 or better
With no line posted, the pick is a pair of prices. Our 52.4% for the Sabres, less the 5-point threshold, is 47.4%. That is below even money, so Buffalo is a bet only as an underdog, at +111 or better (+115, +120 and so on). Our 47.6% for the Stars, less 5, is 42.6%. At +135 or better, Dallas is a bet. If either team is priced as the favourite, that side is a pass.
Those are fair prices, with the margin taken out. A posted line carries a margin on both sides, so the posted pair has to be converted before it is compared. At +110 the Sabres gap is 4.8 points, and at +134 the Stars gap is 4.9. Both are passes.
It rests on 82 games, 41 at home for the Sabres and 41 on the road for the Stars, all from last season.
What changes it
The line. When a price is posted, the margin comes out of it, and the call is whatever side clears 5 points at that price, or a pass. Both thresholds are underdog prices, so a line that makes either team the favourite leaves that team a pass. The full page re-reads the line on the day.
The summer is the other thing. A season of home and road results says how these two teams played in 2025-26, and nothing on this page says who is in either lineup on 8 October. Check the lineups before you bet.
