Under, mostly

Arizona State went 8-4 and covered 6 of 12, a plain spread record. The total was not plain. Eight games went under, four over, and nine other FBS teams matched that rate. Four straight unders came in September: at Mississippi State, against Texas State, at Baylor and against TCU, on totals from 54.5 to 61.5.

Paid as the underdog

We would look at the Sun Devils’ price before their spread. As underdogs they won three of five and covered three. The wins: 27-24 at Baylor at +105, 26-22 over Texas Tech at +250, and 24-19 at Iowa State at +260, the last two as 8.5-point underdogs. One unit on each priced underdog game returned 5.15 units; eight FBS teams did better in that role, out of 131. The two underdog losses were 10-42 at Utah and 7-23 to Arizona, which had no moneyline.

Favored seven times

As favorites Arizona State won five of seven and covered three. The losses came at -210 in a 20-24 defeat at Mississippi State and at -280 in a 16-24 loss to Houston; the favorite moneyline finished 0.5 units down. Backing them in every one of the 11 priced games returned 4.65 units, and only 12 FBS teams did better. November paid 3.29 of it, including 42-17 at Colorado.

The season ended in the Sun Bowl, a 39-42 loss to Duke.
