Steelers at Patriots Final Score: New England Holds Pittsburgh to Three
New England won 20-3. We passed on the spread, so there is no result to report on the call itself.
The pass was based on New England -5 being about where last season put the game. The market closed at -5 and New England won by 17, so the side we declined to back would have covered by 12. That is a miss of opportunity, not of method, and the method was that there was no edge at that price.
Pittsburgh scored three points on 67 plays. They converted 2 of 12 on third down, were sacked four times for 43 yards, and gained 3.5 yards a play. New England ran 53 plays for 327 yards at 6.2, so the efficiency gap was close to two to one.
Both teams turned it over twice. Neither reached the red zone more than once. This was decided by New England moving the ball at twice the rate and Pittsburgh never sustaining a drive.
The number
New England closed at -5 and covered by 12. The total closed at 41.5 and the game produced 23, so the under won by 18.5.
What would have changed the call
An opening number at -3 or shorter would have made New England a bet at this price. At -5 the edge was not there, and one result does not make it there.
What we said before kickoff
The prediction below is unchanged, so you can see what was argued and judge it.
New England -5 is where last season puts this game. No bet on the spread.
Pittsburgh is getting 5 points at eight of the eleven books quoting this game, read on 17 September 2026. DraftKings and Caesars have Pittsburgh at +5.5, and FanDuel has +4.5. The last time any book quoted Pittsburgh +4 was 13 September, at 12:10 UTC.
That is a one-point move toward New England.
This page took New England -4.5. At -5 the favourite costs half a point more at the median, and on the numbers below it does not clear our threshold. We are withdrawing the pick and passing.
The method and the rule
One clause: we set each team’s 2025 scoring margin in the venue it plays in this week beside the spread, and look at how far the line has moved.
We bet when either gap is two points or more: two points between the line and our number, or a two-point move on one week of results. Below that, a spread is priced about right, and we say so.
Here the first gap is half a point and the move is one point. Neither reaches two.
New England at home, Pittsburgh on the road
New England went 6-3 at home in 2025, scoring 28.2 points a game and allowing 18.2. That is a home margin of 10.0 points a game over nine games.
Pittsburgh went 4-4 on the road, scoring 23.2 and allowing 24.2. That is a road margin of minus 1.0 over eight games.
Halfway between those two numbers is New England by 5.5. The market says 5. The gap is 0.5 points.
The two distributions behind the averages point in opposite directions, and both samples are small. New England won by more than 5 in five of its nine home games: 42-13, 32-13, 27-14, 33-15 and 38-10. The other four were a 24-23 win and three losses, 20-13 to Las Vegas, 21-14 to Pittsburgh and 35-31 to Buffalo.
Pittsburgh lost by more than 5 in two of its eight road games, 25-10 at the Chargers and 13-6 at Cleveland. Its other six road results were a 3-point loss, a 2-point loss and four wins by 2 to 7 points.
Nine games and eight games. Read together they say the line is close. Read separately they say nothing reliable.
What 2025 says
New England finished 14-3 and outscored its opponents by 170 points. Pittsburgh finished 10-7 and outscored its opponents by 10.
New England was better away than at home, 8-0 against 6-3, which is why we use the home split. It reached the Super Bowl, beating the Chargers 16-3, Houston 28-16 and Denver 10-7 before losing 29-13 to Seattle. Pittsburgh lost 30-6 to Houston in the Wild Card round.
Both teams went 7-3 in games decided by eight points or fewer.
The two teams met once in 2025. Pittsburgh won 21-14 at New England on 21 September 2025. That is one game and proves nothing about this one.
What Week 1 says
New England lost 13-10 at Seattle as a 3-point underdog, a push. It led 10-3 after three quarters and was outscored 10-0 in the fourth.
Pittsburgh beat Atlanta 20-13 at home as a 6-point favourite and covered by one. It led 13-7 at half-time and scored nothing in the third quarter.
So the line has moved a point toward the team that lost, away from the team that won and covered. That direction runs against the only 2026 results. At two points it would be a bet under our rule. At one point it is not.
What the price says
The moneyline has New England at -233 and Pittsburgh at +195, the median of eleven books. With the bookmaker’s margin removed, that is New England 67.4% to win the game.
At -233 a New England moneyline bet needs 70.0% to break even, and at +195 a Pittsburgh bet needs 33.9%. Our method is written for the spread and gives no number for either, so we make no moneyline bet.
Pick: pass at New England -5
Price: Pittsburgh +5 at eight books, from -105 to -110, read 17 September 2026, 05:24 UTC. The same side was +4 on 13 September.
At -105 a Pittsburgh +5 bet needs 51.2% to break even, and at -110 it needs 52.4%. The +5.5 at DraftKings (-115) and Caesars (-114) needs 53.5% and 53.3%. FanDuel’s +4.5 at -102 needs 50.5%.
The New England side costs about the same. New England -5 runs from -105 at LowVig to -112 at BetRivers, 51.2% to 52.8%. DraftKings has -5.5 at -105 and Caesars -5.5 at -108, 51.2% and 51.9%. FanDuel’s -4.5 at -120 needs 54.5%.
None of those prices is wrong by enough on either side. Our number is 5.5, and every line on offer sits between 4.5 and 5.5.
The total
The total has moved further than the spread. It was 43.5 on 14 September, 42 on 15 September and 42.5 on 16 September. It is 41.5 at all eleven books now.
That is a two-point fall, and both Week 1 games went under: New England’s produced 23 points against a closing total of 44.5, and Pittsburgh’s produced 33 against 41.
Last season points against the move. Pittsburgh’s 2025 games had a median of 47 points and 12 of 17 went over 41.5. New England’s also had a median of 47, and 14 of 17 went over. The one meeting produced 35.
Our rule is written for spreads and has not been applied to totals, so there is no bet here. If it were applied, it would point to the over, priced from -108 at LowVig (51.9% to break even) to -114 at Caesars (53.3%). The under is -108 to -112, 51.9% to 52.8%.
What would change the call
The spread reaching Pittsburgh +6. That is a two-point move from the +4 of 13 September, and under our rule the pick would be Pittsburgh, against the move.
The spread reaching New England -3.5. That is two points from our 5.5, and the pick would be New England. At that line New England needs to win by four, so a three-point win, the most common winning margin in the NFL, would still lose the bet. We would still take it, because two points is the threshold we set.
