Packers at Jets Final Score: Green Bay Wins in Overtime and Misses by a Half Point
Green Bay won 20-17 in overtime. We took the Packers at -3.5 and the call lost by half a point.
This is the cleanest possible example of why the number matters more than the winner. Green Bay was -5.5 on 13 September and -3.5 when we wrote it, and we took the improved price. The line closed at 3. At 3 this is a push. At the 3.5 we published, it is a loss. We graded it against the number we actually put out.
The game produced 199 yards for Green Bay on 50 plays, at 4.0 a play. The Jets had 285 on 72 plays, also at 4.0. Green Bay converted 1 of 9 on third down and won anyway.
Penalties were the strangest column on the sheet: 14 for 133 yards against Green Bay, 13 for 156 against the Jets. 27 accepted penalties in one game is not a sample you can build anything on, and it is most of the reason this went to a fifth quarter tied at 17.
The number
The Jets closed at +3, which makes the closing line a push. Our published price of -3.5 lost. The total closed at 44.5 and the game produced 37, so the under won by seven and a half.
What would have changed the call
Waiting. The line moved two points in our favour before we wrote and half a point against us after. Taking -3 rather than -3.5 turns a loss into a push, on identical analysis.
What we said before kickoff
The prediction below is unchanged, so you can see what was argued and judge it.
Green Bay was -5.5 on 13 September and is -3.5 now. Take the Packers at -3.5.
Green Bay is a 3.5-point favourite at nine of the eleven books quoting this game, read on 17 September 2026 at 05:24 UTC. The other two have Green Bay at -3. On 13 September, the same market had Green Bay at -5.5.
In between, books quoted Green Bay at -4 on 15 September and -4.5 on 16 September. From -5.5 to -3.5 is a two-point move toward New York, through 5 and through 4.
This page took New York and the points on 16 September, when Green Bay was laying 4.5. At today’s price it takes Green Bay. The extra point that made the Jets a bet has gone, and the number has now moved far enough to argue the other way.
The method, in one clause
We set a full 2025 season and one game each in 2026 beside the price, and back the season when one game has moved the number.
The rule
We bet against a spread that has moved two points or more when one game each is all the new evidence there is. One game is a result, not a rate.
This move is exactly two points, -5.5 to -3.5. It sits on the threshold with nothing to spare, so the edge is thinner than the 2025 gap between these teams would suggest.
At -5.5, Green Bay needed to win by six. At -3.5 it needs to win by four. Three is the most common winning margin in the NFL, and a three-point Green Bay win still loses this bet.
What Week 1 says
New York won 23-10 at Tennessee. It closed as a 1-point underdog and covered by 14.
Green Bay lost 39-22 at Minnesota. It closed as a 1.5-point underdog and missed the cover by 15.5.
The shapes were different. New York led 10-3 at half-time and 20-3 after three quarters, then lost the fourth 7-3. Green Bay led 19-10 at half-time and 22-17 after three, then lost the fourth quarter 22-0.
So Green Bay’s whole miss came in one quarter. It went into the fourth five points ahead.
Against the closing prices, the two games add up to a 29.5-point swing: New York 14 points better than expected, Green Bay 15.5 worse. Since 13 September the spread has moved two points. We think two is still too many for one game each.
What 2025 says
Green Bay went 9-7-1 and outscored its opponents by 31 points. New York went 3-14 and was outscored by 203.
Between those two figures sit 234 points over 17 games, or 13.8 a game. Green Bay scored 23.0 points a game and allowed 21.2. New York scored 17.6 and allowed 29.6.
Green Bay won by four or more in 9 of its 17 games. New York did it once, 27-20 over Cleveland at home.
In games decided by eight points or fewer, Green Bay went 4-5-1 and New York went 3-5.
Green Bay reached the Wild Card round and lost 31-27 at Chicago. New York missed the playoffs and went 0-6 in its division. The two teams did not play each other in 2025.
New York at home, Green Bay on the road
This is where a case for New York would have to live. It is thin.
At home in 2025, New York went 2-6, scoring 18.0 points a game and allowing 29.2. The London game against Denver was a neutral site and is left out. On the road, Green Bay went 4-4-1, scoring 23.9 and allowing 24.1.
Green Bay was an ordinary road team, with an average road margin of -0.2 points. New York was outscored by 90 points in its eight home games, 11.25 a game. Five of its six home losses were by seven points or more.
Those two averages are 11 points apart. The price is 3.5.
All 17 of those games are from 2025. Nothing in them says what changed on either roster over the summer, and that is where the data runs out.
What the price says
The moneyline has Green Bay at -179 and New York at +150, the median of eleven books. With the bookmaker’s margin removed, that is Green Bay 61.6% to win the game.
At -179, a Green Bay moneyline bet needs to win 64.2% of the time to break even. We make no bet on it.
The spread prices lean the other way from us, and that should be said. Green Bay -3.5 costs -105 at six books. New York +3.5 costs -115 at five, and no book offers it cheaper than -108. The books are charging more for the Jets side of the same number, which is a small point against this pick.
Pick: Green Bay Packers -3.5 (-105)
Price: -3.5 at nine books, from -105 to -112, read 17 September 2026, 05:24 UTC. The same side was -5.5 on 13 September.
At -105 the bet needs to win 51.2% of the time to break even. At -112 it needs 52.8%. Six of the nine books are at -105.
Two books have Green Bay at -3, priced at -112 and -115. That turns a three-point Green Bay win from a loss into a push, and it costs a break-even of 52.8% or 53.5%. We take -3.5 at -105.
The other side was priced and passed. New York +3.5 runs from -108 to -115, a break-even of 51.9% to 53.5%. One book has New York +3 at +101, which needs 49.8%. Those are the prices for a team that lost its home games by 11.25 points a game last season, and one game in Tennessee does not move us onto them.
The total
The total is 44.5 at ten books and 45 at one. It was 42.5 on 13 September and 45.5 on 14 September.
Last season does not lean either way against 44.5.
Green Bay’s 2025 games went over 10 times and under 7, with a median of 45. New York’s went over 9 times and under 8, with a median of 47.
Week 1 gave one of each. Green Bay’s game produced 61 points against a closing 45.5, and New York’s produced 33 against 38.5. Our rule is written for spreads, and nothing in the totals is close to an edge. No bet.
What would change the call
A verified injury report. Nothing in this piece says who is available for either team, and both reports should be read before betting.
The line returning to -4.5 or longer. Half the move would then have undone itself, and the price would be paying less for the same view.
The line reaching -2.5 or shorter. That crosses 3, and a move of that size on one game each is one we would want explained before betting into it.
