Take the Eagles +5.5. Our number makes Philadelphia a small favourite, and the market makes them a 5.5-point underdog.

Our weighted number is Philadelphia by 0.64. The median of 11 books, read on 31 October 2026 at 05:10 UTC, has Washington -5.5. That gap of 6.14 points is the argument. My threshold is two points, and a spread bet has to clear it twice: once on 2025 alone, once on the blend of 2025 and 2026, both on the same side.

The prices and what they say

Eight of the 11 books have Philadelphia +5.5 and three have +6. Across the books the Philadelphia spread price runs from -115 to +101. On the moneyline the median is Washington -250 and Philadelphia +210.

A book builds in a margin: the extra that makes the two prices add to more than 100%. With it taken out, the moneyline gives Washington a 68.9% chance to win and Philadelphia 31.1%. That price is context only. I stake the spread.

The line has moved a long way. The earliest quotes, on 13 September 2026, had Philadelphia favoured by 1.5 to 2.5. By 27 October Philadelphia was getting 3.5, then 4 and 4.5. On 28 October it was +5, and on 30 October +6.5. The 31 October read has 5.5 and 6. Since opening, the market has moved away from Philadelphia by about a touchdown.

How Philadelphia by 0.64 is reached

The method in one clause: half the gap between the two teams’ points-per-game differentials, plus 2.5 points for the home team. In 2025 Philadelphia’s differential was +3.18 a game and Washington’s was -5.59. With Washington’s 2.5 for home field included, that makes Philadelphia a 1.88-point favourite.

This season the two differentials are almost level. Philadelphia is -6.86 a game over seven games, and Washington is -6.67 over six. On 2026 alone Washington is a 2.6-point favourite. Weight the two seasons by games played and the number is Philadelphia by 0.64.

Against Washington -5.5, the 2025 number gives an edge of 7.38 points on Philadelphia. The weighted number gives 6.14. Both clear two, the same way. Even the 2026 number by itself, Washington by 2.6, sits under the market’s 5.5.

This season so far

Records and covers are outside the method. Only points scored and allowed enter it. Philadelphia is 2-5 and has been outscored 175-127. The Eagles beat Washington 24-22 in Week 1 and won 24-20 at Tennessee. Since then they have lost five straight: 27-7 at Chicago, 24-20 to the Rams, 19-17 at Jacksonville, 25-14 to Carolina and 38-21 to Dallas.

Washington is 1-4-1 and has been outscored 172-132. The one win was 33-31 against Seattle. The tie was 27-27 against the Giants.

Against the closing spread, Philadelphia’s one cover this season came at Jacksonville, as an 8-point underdog. Washington covered at Philadelphia, against Seattle and at San Francisco. Seven games and six games are not a rate. They describe this season and prove nothing about Sunday.

Philadelphia on the road, Washington at home

The method does not use venue splits. A flat 2.5 points stands in for home field. In 2025 Philadelphia went 6-3 on the road, scoring 20.9 a game and allowing 20.1. Washington went 2-6 at home, scoring 23.6 and allowing 27.9. Both splits leave out neutral-site games.

The halves left out run the same way as the bet. A road side that allowed 20.1 against a home side that allowed 27.9 would not narrow the gap to the market. This season Philadelphia is 1-2 on the road and Washington is 1-1-1 at home. Three games each say nothing.

The season around it

Philadelphia finished 2025 at 11-6, with a points difference of +54. The Eagles went 8-4 in one-score games and 3-3 in the division. They lost the Wild Card game at home to San Francisco, 23-19. Washington finished 5-12, with a difference of -95, 2-5 in one-score games and 3-3 in the division, and missed the playoffs.

The teams met twice in 2025, and both games are inside the 2025 number. Philadelphia won 29-18 at Washington in Week 16, on Saturday 20 December. What kills the bet

The price first. Below Philadelphia +1.36 the edge falls under two points and I pass. Washington becomes the bet only at Washington +3.88 or better, which would take the line across the opening number.

The other risk is the gap itself. A 6.14-point disagreement says the market is weighting this season much more heavily than the method does. If both teams’ 2026 rates are the better guide, the 2026-only number, Washington by 2.6, is still on Philadelphia’s side of 5.5. Read both injury reports and check the lineups before you bet.

The total

The method for the total: each team’s expected points are the average of what it scored a game and what the other side allowed. On 2025 that puts Philadelphia at 24.4 and Washington at 20.0, a total of 44.4. This season alone gives 46.9, and the games-weighted blend is 45.09.

The market has 40.5 at six books and 40 at five. The edge on the over is 3.9 on 2025 and 4.59 on the blend, both clear of the threshold. The page stakes the spread, so the over is a lean, not a second bet. It holds at 42.4 or below. The under would need 47.09 or above.

Washington games run high. Last season 12 of their games went over 40.5 and 5 went under, on a median total of 49. This season five of six have gone over. Philadelphia is closer to the line: 10 over and 7 under in 2025, on a median of 41, and four of seven over this season. The total opened at 46.5 on 13 September, fell to 39.5 on 27 October, and is 40.5 and 40 on the 31 October read.
