Eagles at Titans Final Score: Tennessee Covers in a Game That Went Over
Philadelphia won 24-20. We took the over 39.5 and it cashed with 44 points on the board.
The total had dropped from 42.5 to 39.5 in the days before kickoff and I took the other side of that move. Four and a half points of line movement is the market telling you something, and here the market was wrong by four and a half in the opposite direction.
Both teams scored in three of the four quarters. Tennessee led 7-0 after the first and 10-14 at the half, and the fourth quarter alone produced 10 points. There was no stretch where this looked like it would land in the thirties.
Philadelphia held the ball 36:25 and converted 11 of 18 on third down. That is the drive-sustaining number that keeps a total alive, and it is also why they won despite two turnovers.
The number
Tennessee closed at +7 and covered comfortably, losing by 4. The total closed at 39.5 and the game went 44, so the over won by four and a half.
What we said before kickoff
The prediction below is unchanged, so you can see what was argued and judge it.
The total has dropped from 42.5 to 39.5. Take the over.
On 16 September this page had the under 39.5 and Philadelphia -7. I’ve dropped both. The under leaned on Tennessee’s 10 points in Week 1, and when I put the 2025 season beside that one game, the numbers point the other way.
My bias, stated once: I don’t enjoy reversing a call I made the day before, and that makes me want this one to land. Weigh it accordingly.
Pick: Over 39.5 (-110)
The over is the bet. Every one of the eleven books quoting this game has the total at 39.5, read on 17 September 2026, and six of them price the over at -110.
Is 39.5 too low for these two teams? Last season 21 of their 34 games went over it. Tennessee’s home games went over in six of nine, and Philadelphia’s road games went over in six of nine as well. Philadelphia’s median game had 41 points in it. Tennessee’s had 47.
The market has come down to meet the under anyway. The total was 42.5 on 13 September, 41 on 14 September and 39 on 16 September, and it sits at 39.5 now.
Here is the doubt, and it is a real one. Add Philadelphia’s 20.9 points a game on the road last season to Tennessee’s 18.2 at home and you get 39.1, under this number. I overrule it with the other half of the same split. Tennessee allowed 27.3 a game at home and Philadelphia allowed 20.1 on the road, which adds to 47.4. A defence that gave up that much at home is the side of this game I trust least.
Week 1 split down the middle. Tennessee lost 23-10 at home to the New York Jets, 33 points against a closing total of 38.5. Philadelphia beat Washington 24-22 at home, 46 points against a closing 44. One under, one over, and neither changes what seventeen games each said.
The shapes are worth a look. Tennessee trailed 20-3 after three quarters before scoring 7 in the fourth. Philadelphia led 17-9 after three and was outscored 13-7 in the fourth.
The real risk to the over is Tennessee’s offence. It scored 16.7 points a game last season and was held to 10 or fewer four times: 0 at Houston, 10 at Las Vegas, 3 at home to Jacksonville and 7 at Jacksonville. Three of those four games stayed under 39.5. Week 1 made it five times in 18 games, and that one stayed under too.
I’m taking the over anyway, and the reason is the other end of the field. Tennessee allowed 30 points or more in five of its nine home games last season, and all five of those games went over 39.5. Only one of its four games of 10 points or fewer was at home.
Price discipline: over 39.5 is a bet at -110 or better, and still a bet at 40.5, because neither team had a 2025 game finish on exactly 40. At 41.5 I pass. Two of Philadelphia’s games finished on 41.
At -108, the best price on the board, the over needs to win 51.9% of the time to break even. At -110 it needs 52.4%. Two books have it at -115, which needs 53.5%, and that is the price I would skip.
The under is the cheaper side. It is -105 at two books and no worse than -112 anywhere, which needs 51.2% to 52.8%. I would still rather pay -110 for the side the 2025 season argues for than save a little on the side it argues against.
The spread: no bet
Philadelphia is -7 at all eleven books, priced from -108 to -115, and Tennessee +7 runs from -102 to -110. It was -4.5 on 11 September, -5.5 on 13 September and -7.5 on 15 September.
I had Philadelphia -7 on this page on 16 September. The 2025 season does not let me keep it. Philadelphia won by more than 7 in three of its 17 games, and in one of nine on the road, 29-18 at Washington. Two more of its wins came by exactly 7, which is a push at this number.
Tennessee lost by more than 7 in 11 of its 17 games, and in five of nine at home. So one team rarely wins big and the other usually loses big. Those two facts cancel. I’m not laying 7 on a coin flip, and I’m not taking Tennessee at -102 on one either.
The records are not close. Philadelphia went 11-6 last season and outscored its opponents by 54 points. Tennessee went 3-14 and was outscored by 194. But Philadelphia went 8-4 in games decided by eight points or fewer. A team that lives in one-score games is a team I don’t lay 7 with.
Week 1 said the same thing about Philadelphia. It closed as a 6-point favourite against Washington and won by 2. Tennessee closed as a 1-point favourite against the Jets and lost by 13.
The moneyline, and the rest
Philadelphia is -345 and Tennessee +270, the median of eleven books. With the bookmaker’s margin removed, that prices Philadelphia to win 74.2% of the time.
Is that too high? Philadelphia won 6 of 9 on the road last season, and Tennessee won 1 of 9 at home. I have no quarrel with 74.2%. At -345 Philadelphia needs to win 77.5% of the time to break even, which is more than the price itself implies once the margin is out, so there is nothing to bet.
The two teams did not meet in 2025. Philadelphia’s season ended with a 23-19 home loss to San Francisco in the Wild Card round. Tennessee did not make the playoffs.
What changes it
The total climbing to 41.5 or higher. That is where I said I pass, and I mean it. A drop to 38.5, where Tennessee’s Week 1 game closed, makes the same bet better, and I would take the over there without a second thought.
A spread of Philadelphia -6 does not bring the side back for me. Philadelphia won by 6 or more in seven of 17 games last season, and I want better than that before laying points with them.
Read both injury reports before you bet. Nothing in this piece says who is available, and the over depends on both offences on Sunday 20 September.
