Red Wings vs Lightning Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Bet the Red Wings on the moneyline in Tampa. Our number gives Detroit a 43.1% chance; the price gives 29.5%.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are -278 and the Detroit Red Wings +225 at DraftKings. With the margin out, that is 70.5% for Tampa Bay and 29.5% for Detroit. Our number has the Lightning at 56.9% and the Red Wings at 43.1%. The 13.6-point gap toward Detroit is the whole argument.
How 56.9% is reached
Our home win chance is the average of two 2025-26 rates: the home team’s win rate in its own arena and the visitor’s loss rate on the road. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins. Neutral-site games are left out of both rates, so “at home” here means games in the team’s own building.
The Lightning went 25-14-1 at home, a 62.5% home win rate. The Red Wings went 20-15-6 on the road, a 51.2% road loss rate. The average of 62.5% and 51.2% makes Tampa Bay a 56.9% winner and Detroit 43.1%. Against the price, that is 13.6 points better for the Red Wings.
The margin is the extra a book builds into both prices so the pair adds to more than 100%. At -278 and +225 the two prices add to 104.3%. With it removed, the Lightning are 70.5% and the Red Wings 29.5%.
Every input is from 2025-26, so this season is not in the figures. The Lightning are 8-3-2 and 6-0-0 at home, and lost 5-4 in a shootout at Nashville on Saturday, 31 October. Andrei Vasilevskiy has played 10 of their games and Dennis Hildeby 3. The Red Wings are 6-5-3, 2-1-2 on the road, and lost 5-4 to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. John Gibson has played 10 of their games and Daniil Tarasov 4. Tampa Bay’s perfect home start is the strongest point against the bet. It sits outside the method.
Tampa Bay at home, Detroit on the road
These are the halves the method uses. The Lightning at home scored 3.27 a game and allowed 2.75, a surplus of 0.52. The Red Wings on the road scored 2.78 and allowed 2.95, a deficit of 0.17.
Then the halves it leaves out. Tampa Bay on the road went 24-12-5, a 58.5% win rate, scoring 3.73 and allowing 2.83: a surplus of 0.9 a game, larger than at home. Detroit at home went 21-16-4, 51.2%, scoring 3.10 and allowing 3.34. Neither half is in our number. The Lightning’s better half is the one away from their own arena.
The season around it
Tampa Bay went 50-26-6 with 106 points and a goal difference of +59. The Lightning then lost a seven-game series to the Montreal Canadiens, 3-4. Detroit went 41-31-10 with 92 points, was outscored by 17 and missed the playoffs.
Detroit’s record in close games is the reason its road loss rate sits near half. The Red Wings went 18-5-10 in one-goal games and won 11 of the 21 that went past regulation. Tampa Bay went 15-10-6 in one-goal games and won 10 of its 16 past 60 minutes. Detroit lost by two goals or more in 26 of 82 games; Tampa Bay won by two or more in 35 of 82.
The Lightning won three of the four games between the teams in 2025-26. The two in Tampa were Lightning wins, 4-1 on 12 March 2026 and 4-3 in overtime on 13 April 2026, and both are inside our number: they count in Tampa Bay’s home record and Detroit’s road record. The two in Detroit are in neither half: a 2-1 overtime Red Wings win on 17 October 2025 and a 6-3 Lightning win on 28 November 2025.
Pick: Red Wings +225
Bet the Red Wings on the moneyline at +225. The gap is 13.6 points toward Detroit, against a threshold of 5. Any gap under 5 points is a pass.
The line read Lightning -278 and Red Wings +225 on 2 November 2026 at 17:46 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN. It opened at the same prices, -278 and +225, so the market’s chances have not moved since opening.
What kills the bet
A shorter Detroit price. At +163 or longer, the Red Wings are a bet whatever Tampa Bay is priced at. Against the Lightning at -278, they stay a bet down to +121.
For the Lightning to become the bet, they would have to be -108 or longer, whatever Detroit’s price. Against the Red Wings at +225, Tampa Bay would need to be +201 or longer. They are -278.
The injury list does not change our number. ESPN’s game page lists Dylan Larkin on injured reserve with a suspension for Detroit, along with Mason Appleton (undisclosed), Marco Kasper (upper body) and Simon Edvinsson (contract dispute) on injured reserve, and Albert Johansson as day-to-day. Tampa Bay has Zemgus Girgensons out with a lower-body injury, Yanni Gourde on injured reserve with a hip injury and Erik Cernak day-to-day. No goalie is on either list. Check the lineups before you bet.
The total and the puck line
The total is 6.5, over +110 and under -130. The Lightning’s games went over 6.5 in 38 of 82, the Red Wings’ in 37 of 82. Tampa Bay’s home games averaged 6.02 goals and Detroit’s road games 5.73.
Those are 46.3% and 45.1%, an average of 45.7% for the over. With the margin removed, the over is priced at 45.7% and the under at 54.3%. The gap is 0.0 points. Pass on the total.
On the puck line, Tampa Bay is -1.5 at -118 and Detroit +1.5 at -102, which is 51.7% and 48.3% without the margin. The Lightning won by two goals or more in 35 of 82 games, and the Red Wings lost by two or more in 26 of 82. Averaged, Lightning -1.5 lands 37.2% of the time against 51.7% priced, a gap of 14.5 points toward Red Wings +1.5. Our method stakes the moneyline only, so this is a lean on the same side. One bet on this game: the Red Wings at +225.
