Our number has the Lightning 2.6 points above the price, about half of what a bet needs. No bet.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are -148 against the Washington Capitals at +124 at DraftKings. With the margin removed, that is a 57.2% chance for the Lightning. Our number is 59.8%. The gap is 2.6 points, and a side is a bet only when the gap is 5 or more.
How the number is built
One clause: our home win chance is the average of the home team’s 2025-26 home win rate and the visitor’s 2025-26 road loss rate, where a win in overtime or a shootout counts as a win.
The Lightning went 26-14-1 at home last season, meaning 26 wins, 14 regulation losses and 1 loss after regulation. That is a 63.4% home win rate over 41 games. The Capitals went 18-19-4 on the road and lost 23 of 41, a 56.1% road loss rate. The average is 59.8% for the Lightning, 40.2% for the Capitals.
The margin is the few points a book builds into both prices so that they add to more than 100%. Removed from -148 and +124, it leaves the Lightning at 57.2% and the Capitals at 42.8%.
It is a new season. Rosters change over a summer, and nothing on this page measures what changed. The only evidence in hand is last season: 41 home games for the Lightning and 41 road games for the Capitals. The Lightning play the Rangers in New York on 1 October, and that game is not in these figures.
The Lightning at home, the Capitals on the road
The Lightning at home scored 3.34 goals a game and allowed 2.80. The Capitals on the road scored 3.02 and allowed 3.29. That is 0.32 goals a game more scored by the home side and 0.49 fewer allowed.
The Capitals were a different team away from Washington. They went 25-11-5 at home and 18-19-4 on the road. The method uses the road half, the weaker one.
The Lightning finished 50-26-6 with 106 points and outscored opponents by 0.72 goals a game. They lost their one playoff series, 4-3 to the Montreal Canadiens. The Capitals finished 43-30-9 with 95 points, outscored opponents by 0.23 a game, and did not reach the playoffs.
The teams met three times in 2025-26. The Capitals won 3-2 in overtime at home on 14 October. The Lightning won 3-2 at home on 9 November and 5-3 at Washington on 23 November. Three games are a small sample, and the method does not use them.
The Capitals also play the night before, at the Carolina Hurricanes on 2 October. The method does not account for back-to-back games, and that game is not in these figures.
Pick: no bet
No bet on the moneyline. The gap is 2.6 points against a 5-point threshold.
