Bengals at Texans Final Score: Houston Held to Six and the Under Cashes
Cincinnati won 20-6 in Houston. We had two positions and split them: the Texans to win lost, and the under 45.5 won with 26 points scored.
The Week 2 card finished 8 positions won, 7 lost and one no bet. This game contributed one of each.
The moneyline call rested on Houston going 7-2 at home last season. They out-gained Cincinnati 374 to 267, ran 78 plays to 59, and scored six points. Houston reached the red zone four times and converted none of them. Cincinnati went there once and scored.
That is the whole afternoon. Neither team turned the ball over, so there is no variance story to hide behind. Houston moved the ball for three hours and could not finish a drive.
The under was never troubled. A 45.5 number needed both sides to function and only one of them did.
The number
Houston closed at -2.5 and Cincinnati covered it outright. The total closed at 45.5 and the game produced 26, so the under won by 19.5.
What we said before kickoff
The prediction below is unchanged, so you can read the card as it was written and mark it yourself.
Houston went 7-2 at home last season. Take the Texans to win, and take the under.
I have changed both bets. This page had Cincinnati +3 and the over. At today’s prices the 2025 season argues for Houston, and one good Cincinnati game in Week 1 is not enough to argue back.
Houston is a 2.5-point favourite at nine of the eleven books quoting this game, read on 17 September 2026. MyBookie is the only book with Cincinnati +3, and it charges -120 for it. BetUS has +2.
My bias, up front: I have just switched sides, and a writer who switches wants the new side to be right. So every number below comes from Houston’s and Cincinnati’s 17 games of 2025 and their one game of 2026, and the doubt gets its own section.
Pick: Houston Texans moneyline (-149)
Cincinnati is getting 2.5 points. So why do I want Houston to win outright instead of laying the points?
Because last season Houston won at home and Cincinnati lost on the road. The Texans went 7-2 in Houston, scoring 27.3 points a game and allowing 19.1. The Bengals went 3-5 away, scoring 21.4 and allowing 28.4.
Look at how Cincinnati lost on the road. It lost 48-10 at Minnesota, 28-3 at Denver, 34-12 at Pittsburgh, 27-18 at Green Bay and 39-34 at Buffalo. Only the Buffalo game was decided by eight points or fewer. The three road wins were 17-16 at Cleveland, 32-14 at Baltimore and 45-21 at Miami.
Houston’s two home losses were 20-19 to Tampa Bay and 18-15 to Denver. Both were by three points or fewer. Its seven home wins ran from 23-21 over Las Vegas to 26-0 over Tennessee.
That 23-21 game is why the moneyline is the bet. A two-point Houston win pays on the moneyline and loses at -2.5.
What 2025 says
The full-season gap is wide. Houston finished 12-5 and outscored its opponents by 109 points. Cincinnati finished 6-11 and was outscored by 78.
The difference is defence. Cincinnati actually scored more, 24.4 points a game against Houston’s 23.8. It also allowed 28.9 a game, and Houston allowed 17.4. The Houston defence travelled, too: 15.4 a game allowed on the road.
Close games went Houston’s way too. The Texans were 7-5 in games decided by eight points or fewer, and the Bengals were 3-5.
Houston’s season ended in the Divisional round, a 28-16 loss at New England, after a 30-6 Wild Card win at Pittsburgh. Cincinnati did not make the playoffs. The two teams did not meet in 2025, and this is AFC North at AFC South, so neither division record is on the line.
The doubt: Week 1
Here is the case against me, and it is a real one. Cincinnati won and covered in Week 1, and Houston lost at home.
The Bengals beat Tampa Bay 33-27 as a 4-point favourite. They led 24-10 at half-time, were outscored 17-9 after it, and still covered by two.
Houston lost 36-31 at home to Buffalo as a 1-point underdog. It trailed 24-21 at half-time and 27-21 after three quarters, then won the fourth 10-9. The 36 points were more than Houston allowed in any of its 19 games last season, playoffs included; the most was 30.
I overrule it. One game is one game, and Houston gave up 17.4 a game over the 17 before it. If the Texans allow 36 again on Sunday, the defence argument was wrong.
What the price says
The median of eleven books has Houston at -149 and Cincinnati at +128. Take the bookmaker’s margin out and that prices Houston to win 57.7% of the time.
At -149 the bet needs Houston to win 59.8% of the time to break even. I am paying above the market’s own number, and I know it. I pay it because Houston won 7 of its 9 home games last season, 77.8%, and Cincinnati lost 5 of its 8 on the road. Nine games is a small sample, and I take it anyway.
Price discipline: a bet up to -150, where the break-even is 60.0%. Past that I pass. The Cincinnati side at +128 needs 43.9%, and the Bengals won 3 of 8 on the road last season, 37.5%.
The spread is the close alternative. Houston -2.5 runs from -114 at LowVig to -120 at Bovada, 53.3% to 54.5%, with -118 the middle price. Laying 2.5 would have won six of Houston’s nine home games, 66.7%, against the moneyline’s seven, 77.8%. The moneyline needs 6.5 more points of win rate than -2.5 at LowVig and delivered 11.1 more, so I stay with it. MyBookie has Houston -3 at even money, 50.0%, and none of Houston’s home wins last season was by exactly 3. Cincinnati +2.5 is cheap, from +103 at LowVig to -105, 49.3% to 51.2%, and it would have won 6 of the 17 games in Houston’s home and Cincinnati’s road records, 35.3%.
Pick: Under 46 (-110)
This page also had the over. I have moved to the other side of the total.
The total was 48 on 14 September, 47.5 later that day and 47 on 15 September. It is 46 at eight books now, 46.5 at BetRivers and DraftKings, and 45.5 at FanDuel.
Last season says under. Houston’s games had a median of 39 points, and 12 of 17 finished below 46, with one landing on it. Six of the nine in Houston stayed under: 39, 26, 41, 33, 42 and 44, against 65, 60 and 68.
Put those nine beside Cincinnati’s eight road games, which split three over, three under and two on 46 exactly. That is nine under, six over and two pushes at 46. At 46.5 the two pushes become winners, and the count is 11 under and 6 over.
Week 1 says over, and loudly. Cincinnati’s game produced 60 points against a closing total of 50, and Houston’s produced 67 against 45. I overrule it for the same reason I overrule it on the side: one game each, against a Houston defence that allowed 17.4 a game over 17.
Price discipline: the under at 46 runs from -108 at BetMGM and LowVig to -110 at five books, 51.9% to 52.4%. The better number is 46.5 at BetRivers (-112, 52.8%) or DraftKings (-115, 53.5%). FanDuel’s 45.5 at -106 needs 51.5%, and at 45.5 I pass, because the two Cincinnati road games on 46 turn into losses.
What changes it
Houston past -150 on the moneyline. At that price I need more than 60% and the record does not carry it. On the total, 45.5 across the market is my pass line.
Read both injury reports before you bet. Nothing in this piece says who is available, and the 36 points Houston allowed in Week 1 is the one number I cannot explain from the results.
