Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati by 22 at home last season. I want the Steelers and the points.

Watch Cincinnati after half-time. In Week 1 the Bengals led Tampa Bay 24-10 at the break at home, were outscored 17-9 in the second half, and held on to win 33-27. That is the habit I think decides this game.

Where the price has gone

Cincinnati is a 2.5-point favourite in Pittsburgh at all seven books quoting this game, read on 17 September 2026. The same market had Pittsburgh at +1 on 13 September, and at +1.5 as late as 16 September.

So the market has moved a point and a half toward the visitor in a division game, before either team has played a second game. I can’t find the reason in Week 1. Both teams won at home and both covered the closing spread: Cincinnati won by 6 as a 4-point favourite, and Pittsburgh won by 7 as a 6-point favourite.

The total has gone the other way. It was 47.5 on 16 September and sits between 45.5 and 46.5 now, with a median of 46 across the seven books.

The moneyline has Cincinnati at -134 and Pittsburgh at +113, the middle of four books. Take the bookmaker’s margin out and that prices Pittsburgh to win this game 45.1% of the time.

I think that number is low, and the rest of this piece is why.

What last season says

Pittsburgh finished 2025 at 10-7. Cincinnati finished at 6-11.

The gap is wider than the records. Pittsburgh outscored its opponents by 10 points over 17 games. Cincinnati was outscored by 78.

Look at where the points went. Cincinnati scored more than Pittsburgh, 24.4 a game against 23.4. It also allowed 28.9 a game, six more than Pittsburgh’s 22.8. A team that allows almost 29 a game needs a lot of offence just to stay level.

Two more splits matter here. Pittsburgh was 5-3 in Pittsburgh, not counting a 24-21 win over Minnesota in Dublin. Cincinnati was 3-5 on the road.

The scoring behind those records points the same way. In those eight games in Pittsburgh the Steelers scored 23.4 a game and allowed 21.5. Away from home the Bengals scored 21.4 and allowed 28.4, and three of their five road losses were by 10 points or more: 48-10 at Minnesota, 28-3 at Denver, and 34-12 here.

And in games decided by eight points or fewer, one score either way, Pittsburgh went 7-3 and Cincinnati went 3-5. That is the part I keep coming back to. A 2.5-point spread is a bet on a close game, and last season one of these teams won its close games and the other did not.

Pittsburgh’s season ended with a 30-6 home loss to Houston in the Wild Card round. Cincinnati did not make the playoffs.

The two meetings

They split them, and the home team won both.

Cincinnati won the first one 33-31 at home on 16 October 2025, a two-point game. Pittsburgh won the second 34-12 at home on 16 November 2025.

Two games is not a trend, and I am not calling it one. But this game is in Pittsburgh, and the last time Cincinnati came here it lost by 22.

The division

Three of the four AFC North teams are 1-0 after Week 1: Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Cleveland is 0-1. This is the first AFC North game of 2026, so the winner will be the only team in the division with a division win until Pittsburgh plays at Cleveland in Week 4.

Pittsburgh went 4-2 against the division in 2025, and 3-0 at home: 23-9 over Cleveland, 34-12 over Cincinnati and 26-24 over Baltimore. Cincinnati went 3-3. Its road division games went better than its home ones, 2-1 against 1-2, and the one road loss was this fixture.

The tell, in Week 1

Here is the habit, quarter by quarter. Cincinnati scored 24 points in the first half against Tampa Bay and 9 in the second. Tampa Bay scored 10 before the break and 17 after it.

Pittsburgh’s game against Atlanta went the other way. The Steelers led 13-7 at half-time, and won the second half 7-6. They scored nothing in the third quarter and still did not give the game back.

One game each is one game each. What makes me trust the read is 2025: Cincinnati allowed almost 29 points a game over a full season, and I don’t think a lead built on offence holds when the defence behind it gives up that many.

What Pittsburgh has to do

Stay close through the first half. That is all.

If Cincinnati gets ahead early, as it did against Tampa Bay, I still think the Steelers are the side in it after half-time. If Pittsburgh is level or ahead at the break, I can’t see Cincinnati finding the second-half stops it did not find in Week 1.

The call

I want Pittsburgh and the points, at +2.5. The move from +1 has made the same bet better, and I would take the Steelers to win outright at +113 as well, though the points are the main play.

Three is the number I am watching. If this line reaches +3, a three-point Cincinnati win becomes a push, and the bet gets better again. If it goes back to +1.5, the move I am betting against has undone itself, and I would pass.

The price on Pittsburgh +2.5 runs from -105 to -114 across the seven books. That gap matters more than it looks: at -105 the bet needs to win 51.2% of the time to break even, and at -114 it needs 53.3%. Shop it.

The total

The total opened at 47.5 and is 46 at the median now, 45.5 at two books and 46.5 at two more. I leave it alone, and here is why.

The two teams pull in different directions. Pittsburgh’s 2025 games had a median of 47 points; nine went over 46, seven went under, and one landed on it. Cincinnati’s had a median of 51; nine went over, five went under, and three landed on 46.

The recent games split too. The two meetings last season produced 64 and 46 points. In Week 1, Cincinnati’s game produced 60 and Pittsburgh’s produced 33.

Cincinnati’s games ran higher than Pittsburgh’s, a median of 51 against 47, and this one is in Pittsburgh. That is a lean, not a bet, and I am not putting money behind a lean.

What changes it

Sunday. Cincinnati plays at Houston, getting 2.5 at the median of eleven books. Pittsburgh plays at New England, getting 5.

If Cincinnati wins in Houston and holds its lead through the second half, the tell is gone. If Pittsburgh loses by more than five in New England, the 2026 side of this argument is no longer level, and I will say so here.

And read both injury reports before you bet. Nothing in this piece says who is available.
