Dolphins at 49ers Final Score: San Francisco Covers the 13 in the Third

San Francisco won 35-13. We took Miami +13.5 and the call lost by eight and a half.

The argument was that San Francisco did not win a home game by 14 or more in 2025. That was true and it was a one-season sample, which is not enough to price a game on. They won this one by 22.

The third quarter decided it. San Francisco scored 21 and Miami scored nothing, turning a 14-6 game into 35-6. Before that the number was live.

San Francisco went 5 for 5 in the red zone. Miami went 0 for 2. The 49ers gained 382 yards on 49 plays, which is 7.8 a play, against Miami’s 5.1. Neither side turned it over, so this was efficiency rather than variance.

The number

San Francisco closed at -13 and covered by 9. The total closed at 45 and the game went 48, so the over won by three.

What would have changed the call

A number above 16 would have made Miami a bet on the same reasoning. At 13.5 the margin for error was one score, and the third quarter removed it.

What we said before kickoff

The prediction below is unchanged, so you can see what was argued and judge it.

San Francisco did not win a home game by 14 or more in 2025. Take Miami +13.5.

Miami is getting 13 points at six of the eleven books quoting this game, read on 17 September 2026 at 05:24 UTC. Four more have Miami at +13.5 and one has +14.

Books had Miami at +11 on 7 September, +11.5 on 11 September and +12.5 on 15 September. From +11.5 to +13.5 is two points toward San Francisco.

This page took Miami and the points on 16 September. The side has not changed, and the number on it is bigger than on any of those dates.

The method, in one clause

We set the favourite’s own 2025 home margins beside the spread, and ask how often it has won by this much where it is playing.

The rule

We take a double-digit underdog when the favourite’s record at that venue holds no win by the number on offer. The price then asks for something the team has not shown there.

Eight home games is a small sample. It proves nothing on its own. For a spread this size it is still the right sample to read, because a 13.5-point cover is decided by the size of the favourite’s wins.

San Francisco at home, Miami on the road

The bet rests on this split. At home in 2025, San Francisco went 5-3, scoring 23.1 points a game and allowing 22.1. Its average home margin was +1.0 point. On the road, Miami went 2-6, scoring 19.0 and allowing 26.0, an average margin of -7.0.

Those two averages are 8 points apart. The spread is 13.

San Francisco’s eight home margins were +1, -5, +10, -16, +11, +13, +4 and -10. The biggest was 13, in a 37-24 win over Tennessee. At +13.5, that game is a win for this bet. At +13 it is a push.

What 2025 says

San Francisco went 12-5 and outscored its opponents by 66 points. Miami went 7-10 and was outscored by 77.

San Francisco scored 25.7 points a game and allowed 21.8. Miami scored 20.4 and allowed 24.9. In games decided by eight points or fewer, San Francisco went 5-1 and Miami went 4-3.

San Francisco’s big wins came away from home. It won by 19 at Arizona, by 18 at Cleveland and by 21 at Indianapolis. Those were its only regular-season wins by 14 or more.

That is the strongest case for San Francisco, and it has a Miami half. Miami lost five 2025 games by 22 points or more: 33-8 at Indianapolis, 31-6 at Cleveland, 28-6 against Baltimore, 45-21 against Cincinnati and 38-10 at New England. Two of those five were at home.

San Francisco won 23-19 at Philadelphia in the Wild Card round and lost 41-6 at Seattle in the Divisional round. Miami missed the playoffs. The two teams did not play each other in 2025.

What Week 1 says

San Francisco beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in Melbourne, a neutral site. It closed as a 3.5-point underdog and covered by 23.5.

Miami lost 27-13 at Las Vegas. It closed as a 3-point underdog and missed the cover by 11.

San Francisco led 10-7 at half-time, then scored 17 unanswered points in the second half. Miami trailed 17-6 at half-time and 27-13 after three quarters, and neither side scored in the fourth.

That makes four wins by 14 or more for San Francisco since the start of 2025. Three came on the road and one in Melbourne. None came at home. It also puts a fourteen-point Miami defeat on the record, which would lose this bet by half a point.

One game each is a result, not a rate. It adds one row to each list and changes neither conclusion.

What the price says

The moneyline has San Francisco at -1111 and Miami at +650, the median of eleven books. With the bookmaker’s margin removed, that is Miami 12.7% to win the game.

Moneyline implies Dolphins 12.7 percent, 49ers 87.3 percentChance to win the game, as pricedDolphins 12.7%49ers 87.3%From the median moneylines of 11 books, Dolphins +650 and 49ers -1111, margin removed.

At +650, a Miami moneyline bet needs to win 13.3% of the time to break even. We make no bet on it. The pick is about the size of a San Francisco win, and the moneyline prices something else.

Pick: Miami Dolphins +13.5 (-110)

Price: +13.5 at four books, from -110 to -118, read 17 September 2026, 05:24 UTC. The same side was +11.5 on 11 September.

At -110 the bet needs to win 52.4% of the time to break even. At -115 it needs 53.5%, and at -118 it needs 54.1%.

Six books have Miami +13, from -105 to -110, which needs 51.2% to 52.4%. That half point is the 13-point home win, San Francisco’s biggest of 2025, turned from a win into a push. We pay for it.

One book has +14 at -115. It covers a 14-point defeat, the margin Miami lost by in Week 1, and needs 53.5%. Where it is available, it is the better number.

The other side was priced and passed. San Francisco -13.5 costs -104 to -110 at four books, a break-even of 51.0% to 52.4%, and -13 costs -105 to -120. Three of the four books quoting 13.5 charge more for Miami than for San Francisco, and the fourth prices both at -110. The books lean the same way we do at this number, and they make Miami the dearer side to bet. Eight home games without a 14-point win are worth paying that for.

The total

The total is 45 at eight books, 45.5 at two and 44.5 at one. It was 46 early on 14 September and 46.5 later that day.

San Francisco’s eight home games last season had a median of 39 points.

Against 45, San Francisco’s 2025 games went over 10 times and under 7, with a median of 47. Its home games split four over and four under. Miami’s games went over 7 times and under 10, with a median of 44.

Both Week 1 games stayed under their closing totals: 34 points against 47.5 in San Francisco’s game, and 40 against 40.5 in Miami’s. Our rule is written for spreads and has not been applied to totals, so there is no bet here. The figures lean to the under, which is priced from -109 to -115 at 45.

What would change the call

A verified injury report. Nothing in this piece says who is available for either team, and both reports should be read before betting.

The line returning to +12.5 or shorter. The 13-point home win would then lose the bet, and the price would no longer sit above everything San Francisco did at home in 2025.

The line reaching +15 or more. That is a move of three and a half points from 11 September, and at that size we would want to know what the market has seen before betting into it.
