Panthers at Browns Final Score: Browns Win 21-18

Final: Cleveland Browns 21, Carolina Panthers 18, Sunday 27 September at Huntington Bank Field.

Both our calls won. Before the game this page said: “Give me Cleveland and the points, and the under alongside it.” “Under 42 (-110).” Browns +2.5 won: Cleveland won by 3. The under 42 won: the teams scored 39.

What decided it

Cleveland won the second quarter by 7. Cleveland turned the ball over 1 time to Carolina’s 1, and gained 259 yards to 360.

The last DraftKings line ESPN holds for the game is CAR -2.5, with a total of 41.5. Carolina did not cover as the favourite. The 39 points went under the total.

What comes next

Carolina plays next against the Detroit Lions on Sunday 4 October: our prediction. Cleveland plays next against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday 1 October: our prediction.

The prediction, as published before the game

Everything below is the page as it stood before the game, kept unchanged as the record. It was titled “Panthers at Browns prediction: Take Browns +2.5”.

Cleveland is getting 2.5 at home against a team that finished 8-9. Give me the Browns and the points.

Cleveland +2.5 (-110 or better)

Carolina went 8-9 last season and was outscored by 69 points. Cleveland went 5-12 and was outscored by 100. On records alone Carolina should be favoured, and they are.

But look at what those records were made of. Carolina scored 18.3 a game. Cleveland scored 16.4. Carolina allowed 22.4 and Cleveland allowed 22.3, a tenth of a point between two defences over a full season.

Worst price to bet: Cleveland +2.5 (-110). At +2 this is a pass.

This is a bad-offence game

Two teams who could not score last season, and the defences are the same.

The total is 42, and it is low for a reason. When both offences are this limited, the game tends to be decided by a single score, and a single score is exactly what the points are there to cover.

Concede it, then land it

Carolina is the better team. I am not arguing otherwise: eight wins against five, and a points differential 31 better across a full season. If this were a neutral field I would want Carolina.

It is not a neutral field. A price just under a field goal is about what home field alone is worth, so the market is effectively calling these two identical. On offence it is nearly right, on defence it is right to a tenth of a point, and Cleveland gets the crowd. Give me the points.

Where the price has gone

The number has come off three. On Monday the median was Cleveland +3 across 10 books; on 24 September it is +2.5 across 11, with six books at 2.5 and five still at 3. That half point is the one that costs most, because a three-point Carolina win now loses the bet instead of pushing it. It is still inside my worst price of +2.5, so the bet stands. If you can find a book still hanging +3, and five of them are, at -110 to -120, take that ticket instead.

Both are 1-1, which settles nothing. Carolina lost 59-37 at home to Chicago and then won 34-3 in Atlanta. Cleveland lost 34-10 in Jacksonville and won 23-19 in Tampa Bay, and has not played at home yet.

A shade under 43 percent for Cleveland once the margin comes out. I think that is close to fair, and I would rather have the points than the outright price.

The total

Forty-two, the median of 11 books. Two defences that allowed 22.3 and 22.4 a game, against two offences that managed 18.3 and 16.4. Everything about that says under. The market has gone the other way: the downloads on 16 September had it between 38 and 40.5, it was 41.5 on Monday, and it is 42 now. Cleveland’s games went over 42 six times in 17 last season, Carolina’s eight.

Under 42 (-110). Worst price to bet: under 42. It is at my limit now, and four books still hang 42.5, which is the better ticket.

Give me Cleveland and the points, and the under alongside it.

Both calls come from last season’s 17-game rates and this week’s prices, read 24 September.
