Wild vs Capitals Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
No bet on the Capitals or the Wild. Run without Filip Gustavsson, our number has Washington 3.6 points better than the price, short of our 5-point bar.
The Washington Capitals are -112 and the Minnesota Wild -108 at DraftKings. With the margin out, that is 50.4% for Washington and 49.6% for Minnesota. Our number is 54.0% for the Capitals. The 3.6-point gap is real, but it is smaller than the 5 points we require before a price becomes a bet.
How 54.0% is reached
Our home win chance is the average of two 2025-26 rates: the home side’s win rate in its own arena and the visitor’s loss rate on the road. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins. Neutral-site games are left out of both rates.
Gustavsson is on injured reserve with a hip injury (ESPN injury list, read 31 October 2026, 15:34 UTC; entry dated 18 October, 19 November given as his return date). When a team’s starting goalie is out, our method is run again on the games without him. Gustavsson appeared in 50 of Minnesota’s 82 games in 2025-26, more than Jesper Wallstedt’s 35, and in 24 of their 41 road games. In the 17 road games he missed, the Wild went 9-4-4, a road loss rate of 47.06%. Seventeen games clears our NHL minimum of 10, so the re-run stands.
The Capitals went 25-11-5 at Capital One Arena, a 61.0% home win rate. Average 61.0% with 47.06% and Washington is 54.0%, Minnesota 46.0%. That is 3.6 points better for the Capitals than the price, against a threshold of 5.
The full road season points the same way, by less. The Wild went 23-14-4 away from home, a 43.9% road loss rate; on that number Washington is 52.4% and the gap is 2.0 points. Taking Gustavsson out makes Minnesota weaker on the road. It still does not open enough room for a bet.
The margin is the extra a book builds into both prices so the pair comes to more than 100%. At -112 and -108 they come to 104.8%. Taken out, the Capitals are 50.4% and the Wild 49.6%.
Every input is from 2025-26. This season is not in the figures. The Capitals are 8-4-0, 6-2-0 at home, and won 4-3 at Nashville on Thursday 29 October. Logan Thompson has played eight of their games and Charlie Lindgren four. The Wild are 9-3-3, 5-3-2 on the road, and lost 4-3 in overtime to the New York Islanders at home on Thursday. Wallstedt has played 13 of their games and Calvin Pickard two.
Washington at home, Minnesota on the road
Over the full season the Capitals at home scored 3.39 a game and allowed 2.66, a surplus of 0.73. The Wild on the road scored 3.46 and allowed 3.05, a surplus of 0.41. Both halves of our number come from teams that were good in those buildings.
The halves the method leaves out: Washington on the road went 18-19-4, a 43.9% win rate, scoring 3.02 and allowing 3.29. Minnesota at home went 23-10-8, a 56.1% win rate, scoring 3.17 and allowing 2.80. The Capitals were a weaker team away from their own arena, and that half is not in our number.
The season around it
Minnesota was the better team over 82 games. The Wild went 46-24-12 with 104 points and outscored opponents by 32, then beat Dallas 4-2 in the playoffs before losing 4-1 to Colorado. Washington went 43-30-9 with 95 points, outscored opponents by 19, and missed the playoffs.
The Wild were strong in close games: 20-5-12 in one-goal games, and 15 wins in the 27 that went past regulation. Washington went 13-8-9 in one-goal games and won 6 of its 15 past 60 minutes. The Capitals won by two goals or more 30 times; the Wild lost by two or more 19 times.
The two teams split their 2025-26 games. Washington won 5-1 at home on Friday 17 October 2025, and that game is in the Capitals’ home half of our number. Minnesota won 5-0 at home on Tuesday 16 December 2025, which is in neither half.
Pick: No bet
No bet on this game. The gap is 3.6 points toward Washington on Minnesota’s road games without Gustavsson, and 2.0 on the full road season. Both are under the threshold of 5.
The line read Capitals -112 and Wild -108 on 31 October 2026 at 15:34 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN. It opened at Capitals -118 and Wild -102. Since the open the market gives the Wild 1.3 points more, 49.6% against 48.3%, which moves the price away from our side.
What kills the bet
Here it is what would make one. At +104 or longer the Capitals are a bet whatever Minnesota is priced at. Against the Wild at their current -108, Washington becomes a bet at +101 or longer.
For the Wild to become the bet, they would have to be +144 or longer. They are -108.
The rest is on the ice. Besides Gustavsson, ESPN’s injury list has Joel Eriksson Ek day-to-day, and Jared Spurgeon, Brock Faber and Marcus Foligno on injured reserve for Minnesota. Washington lists Vincent Desharnais, Rasmus Sandin and Patrick Thomas on injured reserve. No other goalie is on either list. Check the lineups before you bet.
The total and the puck line
The total is 6.5, over +110 and under -130. The Capitals’ games went over 6.5 in 34 of 82, a 41.5% rate, and the Wild’s in 42 of 82, 51.2%. Washington’s home games averaged 6.05 goals, Minnesota’s road games 6.51.
Averaged, our number has the over at 46.3%. With the margin removed the over is priced at 45.7% and the under at 54.3%, a gap of 0.6 points toward the over. Pass on the total.
On the puck line, Washington is -1.5 at +210 and Minnesota +1.5 at -258, which is 30.9% and 69.1% without the margin. Over the full season the Capitals won by two goals or more in 30 of 82 games, and the Wild lost by two or more in 19 of 82. Our number has Capitals -1.5 landing 29.9% of the time, 1.0 point toward Wild +1.5. Our method stakes the moneyline only, and a 1.0-point gap is noise. No bet on this game.
