Two weeks of football is still the worst sample in sport, and week 3 is where people stop admitting that. Sixteen games, all thirty-two teams, nobody resting: the last full slate before the byes arrive and the schedule stops being fair.
It is also a strangely low-stakes card on paper. Only three of the sixteen games are inside a division: seven are conference games and six cross the conferences entirely. That combination, big slate and thin consequences, is where opinions get formed that the rest of the season has to live with.

The Take: The week the sample doubles
Week 3 is where a two-game record starts being treated as a identity. It is not. What is real this week is the schedule: the three division games are worth more than the thirteen others, because they are the only ones that put something permanent on the board.
Our view: the most profitable habit in September is refusing to update as fast as the market does. Two results are two results. The teams that looked wrong in week 1 and right in week 2 have told you almost nothing, and they are priced as though they have told you everything.

What changes is how much can be installed, which punishes whoever planned to be clever. Our read: this is a total to look at before it is a side.
