Underdog money, favorite losses

Rhode Island were underdogs 15 times and won six, three of them at long prices: at Yale 86-77 at +340, at Dayton 81-76 at +340, and against Saint Louis at home, 81-76 at +410. One unit on each of the 15 returned 5.72.

As favorites the Rams went 10-7 straight up and lost 4.95 units over 16 priced games; only 12 of the 361 Division I teams ever favored lost more that way. Three home defeats did most of it: La Salle 79-72 at -700, Loyola Chicago 61-57 at -485, and Fordham 70-66 at -225.

Against the spread

Thirteen covers in 32, 40.6%. As favorites they covered 6 of 17, and at home 6 of 16. December was the hole: 3-3 straight up, 0-6 against the number, 2.75 units lost. January was the opposite month, 4-3 and 4.22 units up, with wins at Dayton, at Richmond and at Davidson all priced as underdogs.

Opponents and the finish

La Salle and Fordham both beat Rhode Island twice, and the Rams covered none of those four. Duquesne won two of three, the last 67-61 in the Atlantic 10 tournament, which ended the season. That loss closed a run of five defeats in six games after the Saint Louis upset, with one cover.

The total

Eighteen unders and 14 overs, and the last four games of the season all stayed under, none of them reaching 65 points for the Rams. The Rams allowed 68.19 points a game, and only 40 Division I teams allowed fewer; their own 69.88 a game was lower than all but 53 teams.
