Arizona Cardinals history

The Arizona Cardinals have a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. This organization was originally created in 1898 under the name Morgan Athletic Club. On September 17th, 1920, they joined the NFL as a charter team named the Chicago Cardinals. In 1960, the team relocated to St. Louis. In 1988, they moved to Phoenix and became known as the Arizona Cardinals. 

Throughout their history, the Cardinals have plenty of winning seasons full of impressive achievements. Before the Super Bowl was established in 1967, they won two NFL championships – the first in 1925 and the second in 1947.

The Arizona Cardinals are one of several teams who have yet to win a Super Bowl. They have one Super Bowl appearance, which came in 2008 thanks to the strong connection between quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Unfortunately, this resulted in a nail biting loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cardinals have yet to make a Super Bowl appearance since this loss. 

Below is a quick timeline highlighting the most important moments in the history of the Arizona Cardinals franchise:

• 1898: The team is founded as the Morgan Athletic Club.
• 1920: The team is moved to Chicago and renamed the Chicago Cardinals.
• 1920: The Cardinals become a charter member of the American Professional Football Association (APFA), which became the NFL two years later.
• 1925: The Cardinals are awarded the NFL Championship after the Pottsville Maroons were suspended for playing a game in “another team’s territory.”
• 1947: The Cardinals win their second NFL Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles.
• 1950s: The Cardinals go on a several-year streak of losing seasons. Meanwhile, the cross-town rival Chicago Bears move in and begin stealing from their fanbase.
• 1960: The team relocates to St. Louis, Missouri, and became known as the St. Louis Cardinals.
• 1964: The Cardinals win the now-defunct “Playoff Bowl” to take 3rd place in the league.
• 1988: The team is relocated to Arizona and becomes known as the Arizona Cardinals.
• 1998: The Cardinals make the playoffs for the first time in 16 years and won their first playoff game since 1947.
• 2008: The Cardinals advance to their first-ever Super Bowl after defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. They would go on to lose to the Pittsburhg Steelers by a score of 27-23.
• 2015: The Cardinals finish with a franchise-best regular season record of 13-3. They advanced to the NFC Championship before being defeated by the Carolina Panthers. 
• 2018: The Cardinals finish the season with a franchise-low record of 3-13.
• 2021: The Cardinals return to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. They were defeated by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round.
